Clemson, S.C. ? Tuesday night the Stetson men's soccer team continued its recent strong play on the road with a 2-1 win over Clemson University.
In front of an official attendance of 738 fans, both teams played well in a first half with the Tigers leading the Hatters in shots 7-4. Stetson goalkeeper Evan White picked up a pair of saves (3 for the game).
Freshman defender Miguel Rodrigues opened the scoring at 25:34 when he found the back of the net from six yards out with his first goal of the season. The goal was assisted by senior Gabe Shibly and junior Nate Weiss who started the play with a corner kick.
In the second half control of the pitch went back and forth until late in the game (80:58) when the score became tied. Clemson's Mark Buchholz scored his first goal of the season assisted by John Tardy and Tommy Drake.
Stetson appeared unwilling to give up the advantage it had held most of the match and a little over two minutes later the Hatters took back its control.
At 83:41 freshman Eugene Starikov scored his second goal of the season with assists credited to junior Kirk Labusch and senior Victor Webb. The goal tied him for the team lead in goals on the season, and in points with four.
Stetson finished the game with a 15-13 advantage in shots.
The win boosted Stetson's season record to 3-2-0 and dropped Clemson to 3-3-0. The Hatters will return to the field this weekend at the UCF Invitational taking on Wofford on Friday at 5:00 p.m. and the College of Charlston on Sunday at noon.
