Boca Raton, FL - The Stetson men's soccer team suffered a heart-breaker in overtime to Florida Atlantic University (1-2-0) Thursday night at FAU Field. The Owls controlled play in the first half with 5 five shots to Stetson's two.
Junior Dag Bjorgum opened the scoring at 27:06 with a left foot kick for a 1-0 Owl lead. The goal was assisted by Junior Liam Ogle with a left-to-right cross.
After falling behind in the first half the Hatters mounted a comeback in the second. Just three minutes into the half (48:09) Senior Gabe Shibly set up sophomore midfielder Kevin Munz who tied the score with his first goal of the season.
With the score tied 1-1 the balance shifted towards the Hatters when FAU's Trey McEntee was issued a red card for rough play leaving the Owls shorthanded for the duration of play.
Although the Hatters controlled play and led the second half in shots 6-3 they were not able to take advantage with a go-ahead goal.
After 90 minutes of regulation play the teams went to overtime. FAU Junior forward Shire Standnes finished the scoring at 94:33 with a quick header past Hatters goalkeeper Evan White. The golden goal was the result of a corner kick by Senior Diego Monsalve that bounced around the goalmouth before Standnes picked up the loose ball.
The Hatters (1-2-0) will return to play Wednesday, September 12 when they travel to Orlando to take on the University of Central Florida in a 7:00 p.m. match.
