Hatters Get First A-Sun Victory at USC Upstate

Spartanburg, S.C. ? Senior outside hitter Rebecca Orzechowicz (Miami, Fla.) racked up 25 digs, 17 kills and three blocks to lead the Stetson volleyball team (3-17, 1-12 Atlantic Sun) to its first conference win of the season, a hard-fought five-set victory at USC Upstate (7-15, 3-10 A-Sun).  Freshman setter Jennica Hagberg (Niceville, Fla.) also had a double-double as the Hatters won 20-25, 26-24, 25-23, 20-25, 15-10.

Orzechowicz recorded three of her kills in the final set and slammed home the winning point as Stetson snapped its eight-match losing streak and won for the first time in 13 conference matches this season.

After dropping the first set, Stetson picked itself up with consecutive two-point victories spanning intermission.  In each set the Hatters rose up at the end to throw off deficits with set-closing 3-0 runs.  USC Upstate fought back with a victory in the fourth set to force a winner-take-all fifth stanza, but Stetson raced out to a 9-3 lead in the last set and held on to win 15-10.

Sophomore outside hitter Stephanie Canfield (Panama City, Fla.) joined Orzechowicz in double figures with 10 kills.  Hagberg played an excellent match at the point for Stetson, collecting 42 assists, 14 digs, five kills and three blocks while hitting .417 without an error.  Junior middle blocker Laura Boyd (La Crescenta, Calif.) finished with nine kills while classmate Sarah Sears (Ashburn, Va.) had seven kills and hit a team-high .438 with no errors.  Senior libero Melanie Boyer (New Holland, Ill.) helped pace the defensive effort with 23 digs.

Jovana Lubura (19 kills, 16 digs) and Holly Mauldin (38 assists, 10 digs) each had double-doubles for the Spartans while Sandra Campbell added 19 kills of her own.  Kelsie Queen tallied 15 kills and seven digs.

The Hatters look to turn tonight's success into a bonafide winning streak when they visit ETSU tomorrow afternoon.  The match begins at 3 p.m. in Brooks Gymnasium.
