DeLand, Fla. ? Sophomore outside hitter Stephanie Canfield (Panama City, Fla.) notched a career-high 15 kills along with seven digs, two blocks and an ace to lead the Stetson volleyball team (4-18) to a four-set victory over Volusia County rival Bethune-Cookman Tuesday evening at the Edmunds Center. Freshman setter Jennica Hagberg (Niceville, Fla.) set a career high with 49 assists and tied her career best with 14 digs.
Freshman middle blocker Sam Freeman (Gulf Breeze, Fla.) racked up 12 kills, the first double-digit effort of her young career, and hit .321 in the match. Canfield hit .344 while freshman outside hitter Kaylee Ream (Venice, Fla.) slammed seven kills, hit a match-high .400, collected a career-high 13 digs and served up two aces to extend her multiple-ace streak to three matches. Junior middle blocker Laura Boyd (La Crescenta, Calif.) racked up six blocks (one solo, five assisted) and was a part of all but one of Stetson's seven total rejections on the night.
Senior outside hitter Rebecca Orzechowicz (Miami, Fla.) reached the end of her season-long quest to become the fifth player in program history to record 1,000 career kills and digs. She came into the night needing just one defensive save to achieve that feat, got it early in the first set and went onto finish with 10 digs and seven kills. Senior libero Melanie Boyer (New Holland, Ill.) collected 14 digs.
Danielle Goodrum paced the Wildcats (8-14) with a 19-dig, 12-kill double-double while setter Julie Gibson filled up the stat sheet to the tune of 40 assists, 11 digs, six kills and a .312 attack percentage. Libero Shakhea Moore-Hagins had 19 digs and Jessica Wilson gave B-CU 14 digs, eight kills and a team-high .320 attack percentage without an error.
Although each set was a close affair (total scoring throughout the match was just 98-91 in Stetson's favor), the Hatters never trailed more than a third of the way through any of the sets they won. The Wildcats used a sizzling 7-0 finishing kick in the second set to erase a five-point Stetson advantage and avoid a sweep. Canfield punctuated the match at the end of Set 4 with a kill immediately followed by a block assist with Boyd. Stetson has now won six straight against Bethune-Cookman, swept the season series 2-0 and extended its all-time series lead to a commanding 43-3.
The Hatters continue their final homestand of the 2008 campaign when they host Atlantic Sun Conference rival Mercer at 6 p.m. this Friday (Halloween Night) at the Edmunds Center. Stetson entertains Kennesaw State at 5 p.m. Saturday afternoon on Senior Day before its home finale Tuesday at 7 p.m. against Florida Gulf Coast.
