Nashville, Tenn. ? Stetson senior outside hitter Rebecca Orzechowicz (Miami, Fla.) notched her fourth double-double of the season and became just the ninth player in program history to reach the 1,000 career-kill milestone on Friday night, but it was not enough to prevent the Hatters (2-12, 0-7 Atlantic Sun) from being swept at defending conference tournament champions Lipscomb (9-6, 7-0 A-Sun). Set scores were 25-15, 25-17, 25-15.
Coming into the match with 998 kills after being held to a season-low three in last Saturday's home loss to USC Upstate, Orzechowicz wasted no time in joining the exclusive club as she tallied two of Stetson's first three kills of the match.
After Lipscomb stormed to victory in the first two sets, the Hatters dug in and played the Lady Bisons to a standstill for the first half of the third set. Stetson held a lead as late as 14-13 before falling victim to a dominating 11-0 run that put the outcome out of doubt.
Orzechowicz finished with a team-high 12 kills with just one error, hitting .306 in the process, and also added 12 digs. Senior libero Melanie Boyer (New Holland, Ill.) notched a team-high 13 digs while freshman setter Jennica Hagberg (Niceville, Fla.) handed out 25 assists. With 1,010 career kills, Orzechowicz is now 67 successful attacks away from tying Miki Ford '00 for eighth place all-time.
Alex Kelly, who has won the last two A-Sun Player of the Week awards, led Lipscomb with 15 kills and 18 digs. Setter Stefine Pease also collected a double-double with 37 assists and 13 digs.
Stetson concludes its two-match swing through the Music City tomorrow afternoon when it returns to Lipscomb's Allen Arena to battle Belmont. The Hatter-Bruin match, which will start at 1 p.m. Central (2 p.m. Eastern) is being played on Lipscomb's campus due to preparations for the Presidential Town Hall Debate set for Tuesday night on the BU campus.
