Hatters Make It Seven Straight, Sweep Liberty

DeLand, Fla. ? Senior third baseman Lindsay Wightman (Surrey, B.C.) had four hits, including a double, and drove in a pair of runs to lead the Stetson softball team (20-8) to its sixth and seventh consecutive victories in a doubleheader sweep of visiting Liberty Tuesday evening at Patricia Wilson Field.  Game scores were 5-0 and 2-1.

The Hatters ran their consecutive shutout streak to four with the 5-0 win in the opener.  Stetson scored three runs in the bottom of the second to seize command, with Wightman's two-out, two-run double and junior first baseman Andrea Migliori's (Winter Garden, Fla.) RBI single the big blows.

Junior left fielder Amanda Bailey (Destin, Fla.) added a two-out RBI single in the fifth and Migliori raised her team-leading RBI total to 32 with a run-scoring double in the sixth to round out the scoring.  All five of Stetson's runs scored with two outs.

Sophomore Amanda Lindsey (Byhalia, Miss.) tossed a two-hit shutout, her third blanking in her last four starts.  Lindsey has now allowed three hits or fewer in six of her last seven outings.  She also tied her career high with her fourth nine-strikeout performance of the season.  Lindsey is now 10-6 on the season with an outstanding 1.12 ERA.

Migliori doubled twice and singled while Bailey went three for three with an RBI and a run scored.  Wightman singled and doubled as well for Stetson.  Dana Wheeler took the loss for Liberty by allowing four runs (three earned) on 10 hits in five innings.  She struck out six.

The nightcap was a pitcher's duel throughout between Hatter junior Erica Demers (Miami, Fla.) and Flames righthander Sarah Ellis.  Stetson got on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the fourth by drawing three straight walks, the last of which was earned by senior catcher Blythe Golden (Marianna, Fla.).  That free pass enabled junior shortstop Leo Carre?o (Miami, Fla.) to trot home from third base after singling to get on base.

Liberty (2-12-1) would not go quietly, however, plating an unearned run in the top of the fifth.  Center fielder Amber DePasquale led off with an infield single, went to third on a throwing error and then scored on another wide throw home on a chopper back to the circle.  That run ended Stetson's consecutive scoreless inning streak at 33.1 innings dating back to Saturday, although the Hatters have now gone 36.1 straight frames without surrendering an earned run.

Demers worked her way out of the resulting second and third, none out jam by inducing three consecutive groundouts and it was then time for the Hatter offense to go back to work.  Wightman led off the bottom of the fifth with a single and went to third one batter later on Lindsey's double over DePasquale's head in center field.  Stetson took advantage of a lucky break to score the winning run as Wightman appeared to be caught off third base following a pitch in the dirt.  The throw down to third base by Flames catcher Ashley Williams was off the mark, however, and Wightman raced home to put Stetson ahead 2-1.

That proved to be all the support Demers would need as she allowed none of Liberty's last seven batters to reach second base.  She struck out four Flames in seven innings, scattered four hits and walked none to earn her 10th win of the season and the 60th victory of her career.  Ellis took the loss with two runs allowed (one earned) on six hits and four walks in six innings, fanning three.  Carre?o and Wightman had two hits apiece for Stetson.  Lindsey's double was her sixth of the year.

The Hatters are back in action this weekend when they host the Stetson Spring Classic, their largest tourney of the year.  Five quality squads will descend on Patricia Wilson Field, including Big Ten foes Iowa and Michigan State.  Bowling Green, Cornell and Elon round out the field for the tournament, which begins 11 a.m. Friday morning when the BGSU Falcons take on the Elon Phoenix.  The Hatters play the Falcons at 4 p.m. and the Iowa Hawkeyes at 6:30 p.m. Friday.

Live stats, video and audio for all tournament games are available through Hatter Vision at www.gohatters.com, the official online home of Stetson Athletics.  Tune in all weekend to see the action and hear Jamie Bataille's broadcast.
