Hatters Take the Fight Out of Camels with Doubleheader Sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

DeLand, Fla. ? Stetson used a stellar complete-game performance by first game starter Nick Pugliese (Deltona, Fla) as motivation for a doubleheader sweep of A-Sun foe Campbell University Friday afternoon on Melching Field. The Hatters (11-11, 4-5) defeated the Fighting Camels (7-13, 5-7) 9-1 in the first game and then outlasted Campbell 6-5 over 11 innings in the second.

In game one Pugliese gave up just five hits and one run in nine innings of work. He struck out seven batters while walking two. The senior right hander improved his record to 3-1 on the season.

The Hatters put up the majority of their runs in two big innings; four runs in the 1st

and four runs in the 7th. With one out in the 1st Josh Davis (Chambersburg, Pa.), Jeremy Cruz (Miami, Fla.) and Justin Bass (DeLand, Fla.) hit consecutive singles to load the bases. Brian Pruitt (Miami, Fla.) singled in two runs and Brad Pippa followed with a 2-run double.

After adding a single run in the 3rd inning on an Aaron Crittenden (Fort Myers, Fla.) sacrifice fly, the Hatters ganged up on the Camel pitchers for four more runs in the 7th. Erich Holland (Louisville, Ky.) walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch before being singled home by Casey Frawley (New Haven, Ct.). Cruz and Bass followed with walks to load the bases before Crittenden doubled down the right field line scoring a pair. Bass scored the fourth run of the inning on a sacrifice fly by Pruitt.

Three Hatters finished with two hits in the ball game led by Pippa who was 2-for 4 with 2 RBI. Cruz was 2-for-3 with 3 runs scored and Bass finished 2-for-2 with a pair of walks and a run scored. Crittenden and Pruitt led the RBI barrage with 3 each.

Game two of the doubleheader was more closely contested. Campbell scored first with a run in the top of the first inning off Stetson starter Blake Marsocci (Okeechobbee, Fla.). Stetson answered with a run in the bottom of the 2nd inning. Freshman Frank Florio (Long Valley, NJ) led off with a single to center, moved to second on a Pruitt single to right and advanced to third on a Jacob deGrom (DeLeon Springs, Fla.) single to right. Florio then scored on a sacrifice fly to center by Frawley.

The Camels took a two-run lead with a run in the 3rd inning and another in the 4th. Stetson returned serve with two runs in the bottom of the 7th. Bass came up with a two-out RBI single scoring Davis who led off with a single. Holland reached base on a fielder's choice and later scored the second run when Pruitt was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

Stetson went into the 9th inning with a one-run lead after scoring in the bottom of the 8th, yet could not hold the lead giving up two runs. In the bottom half Pruitt was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, moved to second on a ground out and on to third when Jeff Simpson (Valrico, Fla.) came through with a pinch hit single to left. He scored the tying run on Frawley's second sacrifice fly of the game.

After a scoreless 10th inning the Hatters won the game 6-5 in the bottom of the 11th. With one out Frawley drew a walk and advanced to third when Davis singled through the right side of the infield. Holland then delivered the game-winning RBI with a sacrifice fly to right field.

Freshman relief pitcher Nick Bohne (1-1) picked up the win for the Hatters after pitching one scoreless inning. Marsocci started and pitched 3 innings giving up 3 hits, 3 runs, and striking out one. Andy Mauldin pitched 4 innings of outstanding relief allowing 2 hits and no runs while striking out one batter.

Back on the winning track, this was the first conference series the Hatters have won so far this season after dropping two-of-three at Kennesaw State and again at Garner-Webb. Next week Stetson will travel to Tallahassee for a pair against the Seminoles, before moving on to play an A-Sun series at Mercer in Macon, Ga.
