DeLand, Fla. ? Danielle Jackson (Seminole, Fla.), a sophomore on the Stetson women's golf team, has earned First Team All-Atlantic Sun Conference honors, the league office announced Tuesday. Jackson led Stetson to its second consecutive fourth place finish at the A-Sun Championships and is the first Hatter to earn First Team honors since 2004.
Jackson, the October 2007 Atlantic Sun Women's Golfer of the Month, recorded a team-best 76.3 stroke average for her season, which was highlighted by an individual title at the Cincinnati Spring Invitational in Crystal River, Fla. March 28-29. Jackson's final round of three under par 69 gave her the win in a field of 71 golfers and led Stetson to second place overall.
In the first event of the spring season, the Jacksonville Invitational (Feb. 25-26), Jackson shot +11 over 36 holes to tie for second place individually; she earned another top performance by tying for third in a 74-golfer field at the DeBary Intercollegiate in late October. She placed fifth at the Hatter Fall Classic at Victoria Hills Country Club as Stetson captured the team championship for the first time.
Jackson was joined on the First Team by A-Sun Championships individual medalist Laura Jansone of ETSU, Belmont's Lori Warren and the Campbell duo of Mary Mattson and Maite Ortiz de Pinedo. Warren was named A-Sun Player of the Year. All but Ortiz de Pinedo are underclassmen and are primed to make 2009 a banner year for Atlantic Sun women's golf.
The Hatters competed at the A-Sun Championships with five underclassmen and are slated to return eight of nine letterwinners from a team that has enjoyed unprecedented success in the last two years.
