Macon, Ga. ? Senior outside hitter Rebecca Orzechowicz (Miami, Fla.) recorded her third straight double-double but the Stetson volleyball team (1-9, 0-4 Atlantic Sun) still suffered its sixth consecutive loss Saturday afternoon as the Hatters fell three sets to one at Mercer (5-6, 1-3 A-Sun). Orzechowicz had 11 kills and 11 digs in the 25-19, 21-25, 25-10, 25-21 defeat.
Stetson's struggles at the net continued as it was out-blocked 11-6 and out-killed by a 59-29 margin. The Hatters hit just .068 as a team with junior right side Sarah Sears (Ashburn, Va.) recording eight kills and a team-high .192 attack percentage.
Four Hatters reached double figures in digs, led by 12 from senior libero Melanie Boyer (New Holland, Ill.). Junior Anna Becker (McLean, Ill.) and freshman outside hitter Kaylee Ream (Venice, Fla.) notched 11 digs apiece. Ream added eight kills and three aces in the match. Freshman setter Jennica Hagberg (Niceville, Fla.) tallied 30 assists and eight digs of her own.
Karen Dorris had 16 kills to lead her Bears while setter Kelly Jansen notched a double-double (27 assists, 14 digs). Claire Tucker had a match-high 24 digs.
The only win for the Hatters came in the second set, where they erased an early 4-2 deficit and held the Bears off down the stretch to tie the match 1-1. Hagberg capped the set with a kill off an assist from Boyer.
Stetson will attempt to snap its losing streak Tuesday evening when it takes a short trip up Speedway Boulevard to face Volusia County rival Bethune-Cookman at Moore Gymnasium. The match will begin at 7 p.m.
