DeLand, Fla. ? The Stetson volleyball team (2-11, 0-6 Atlantic Sun) struggled on offense Saturday afternoon at the Edmunds Center against visiting USC Upstate (5-10, 2-5 A-Sun), recording just 24 total kills as it was swept by the Spartans 25-19, 25-21, 25-17. Senior libero Melanie Boyer (New Holland, Ill.) led Stetson with 11 digs, her sixth consecutive match with double-figure digs.
Stetson and USC Upstate traded points for the first half of the first set until the Spartans took the lead for good at 14-13 on a Hatter attack error. The visitors then finished the set on a 13-6 run to claim the 25-19 win.
USC Upstate was simply too much for the Hatters in the final two sets, hitting .381 in the second set and limiting Stetson to a .029 attack percentage in the final stanza.
Sophomore outside hitter Stephanie Canfield (Panama City, Fla.) recorded a team-high five kills while freshman middle blocker Sam Freeman (Gulf Breeze, Fla.) had four kills and hit a team-best .400 in the match. Freshman setter Jennica Hagberg (Niceville, Fla.) handed out 19 assists and collected eight digs.
Jovana Lubura led the Spartans with 16 kills while Sandra Campbell added 13. Setter Holly Mauldin had a double-double with 41 assists and 12 digs. Libero Megan Healey led all players in the match with 18 digs.
Senior outside hitter Rebecca Orzechowicz (Miami, Fla.) finished the match with three kills, leaving her on the cusp of the 1,000 career kill plateau (998). She will shoot for the milestone and the Hatters will go for their first conference win of the season when they travel to Nashville to face Lipscomb and Belmont next weekend. Stetson faces Lipscomb at 7 p.m. Central (8 p.m. Eastern) Friday, October 3 and Belmont at 2 p.m. Central (3 p.m. Eastern) Saturday.
