Nashville, Tenn. - Senior right side Sarah Sears (Ashburn, Va.) led a short-handed Hatters squad with 10 assists, seven kills and five digs Friday evening at conference rival Belmont, but it was not enough as the Bruins (12-12, 8-6 Atlantic Sun) defeated Stetson (1-20, 0-14 A-Sun) 26-28, 25-10, 25-15, 25-18. Senior libero Anna Becker (McLean, Ill.) led all players in the match with 19 digs.
Junior setter Megan Stewart (St. Augustine, Fla.) handed out 14 assists and freshman defensive specialist Monique Russell (Phoenix, Ariz.) collected nine digs for the Hatters, who were playing without several key team members due to illness, including star freshman setter Kelli Carneal (Fredericksburg, Va.)
Bruins setter Channing Salava racked up 48 assists, 10 digs and seven kills to lead her team to victory with Maggie Johnson (19 kills, nine digs), Kayla Albritton (15 kills) and Jenny Gray (nine kills, seven digs) all playing major roles as well. Lauren Hall led the Bruin defensive effort with 15 digs.
The Hatters are back in action tomorrow afternoon at league-leading Lipscomb. The match begins at 2 p.m. CT (3 p.m. ET) at Allen Arena and will be webcast live on A-Sun.TV.
