DeLand, Fla. - Career-high stat lines from several players were not enough for the Stetson volleyball team (1-22, 0-16 Atlantic Sun) in a hard-fought 25-23, 25-22, 25-23 sweep loss to visiting Campbell (16-10, 9-6 A-Sun) Friday at the Edmunds Center. Senior right side Sarah Sears (Ashburn, Va.) had 22 assists and 13 digs while junior setter Megan Stewart (St. Augustine, Fla.) notched 15 assists and 11 digs. All those numbers represent career highs in the first career double-doubles for both players. Senior libero Anna Becker (McLean, Ill.) tallied a career-high 21 digs for the Hatters as well.
Stetson hit .207 in the match, the same figure as the Camels although Campbell won the kills battle 43-41. Emily Werner knocked down 15 kills with five blocks and just one error, hitting .438 in the process, to lead Campbell to the victory. Hope Leatigaga recorded a 22-assist, 10-dig double-double with Paige Tortorello (13 assists), Sarah Hill (11 digs), Jordan Reaves (10 digs) and Caitlin Bendy (eight blocks) also putting up top performances.
Sears, who also collected four kills, and Stewart became the first Hatters to record double-doubles in the same match since Jennica Hagberg (29 assists, 17 digs) and Rebecca Orzechowicz (18 digs, 11 kills) did it Nov. 15, 2008 at North Florida. Junior outside hitter Stephanie Canfield (Panama City, Fla.) recorded a team-high 10 kills for the Hatters. Junior right side Brandy Worlton (Crystal River, Fla.), who transferred into Stetson from Campbell over the summer, knocked down a season-high seven kills against her former teammates.
The Hatters will celebrate Senior Day tomorrow at 4 p.m. prior to the match against ETSU. Becker and Sears along with middle blocker Laura Boyd (La Crescenta, Calif.), setter Christie Johnson (Sebastian, Fla.) and defensive specialist Jessica Pauszek (Deltona, Fla.) will be honored for their contributions to the program.
