Kennesaw, Ga. - Host Kennesaw State (16-10, 10-8 Atlantic Sun) helped its A-Sun volleyball tournament qualifying hopes immensely with a 25-19, 25-11, 25-10 rout of visiting Stetson (1-25, 0-19 A-Sun) Saturday afternoon at the KSU Convocation Center. Junior setter Megan Stewart (St. Augustine, Fla.) led the Hatters with 11 assists and six digs while senior right side Sarah Sears (Ashburn, Va.) made program history with her school record 107th career match played. Stetson has lost 12 consecutive matches and 18 consecutive sets.
KSU thoroughly dominated Stetson in all aspects of the match, out-hitting the Hatters .356 to .047, out-killing them 45-22, out-digging them 63-40, out-blocking them 11-1 and winning the service ace battle 6-1. Asjia Stokes had 12 kills and five aces for the Owls, who also received a 30-assist, 10-dig double-double with four blocks from Ginny Frederick. Chelsey Denesha and Selina O'Leary gave Kennesaw State 17 and 16 digs, respectively, while Callie Churchwell added seven kills and six blocks.
Senior middle blocker Laura Boyd (La Crescenta, Calif.) had five kills and hit .308 for the Hatters; Sears had eight assists and five digs in her 107th match in a Stetson uniform to pass Tanya Roe '97 and former teammate Rebecca Orzechowicz '09 into first place. Senior libero Anna Becker (McLean, Ill.) collected a team-high eight digs.
The Hatters play their final road match of the season Wednesday night at Volusia County rival Bethune-Cookman; the Wildcats were Stetson's only victim of the season back on September 29 at the Edmunds Center. Wednesday's match begins at 7 p.m. at Moore Gymnasium on the B-CU campus.
