DeLand, Fla. - A dominating 22-point, 13-rebound performance in last Thursday's 69-61 win over USC Upstate carried Stetson junior forward Jessica Conner (Cocoa, Fla.) to Atlantic Sun Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week honors, the league office announced Monday. This is the first such award of Conner's career and the first for a Hatter since Sharnesha Smith '09 took the weekly award almost exactly one year ago.
Conner was the driving force in Stetson's first victory of the 2009-10 season, a key A-Sun triumph over the visiting Spartans at the Edmunds Center on December 17. She made nine of 12 field goal attempts (.750) en route to a season scoring high and her second-highest rebounding total of the year, behind only the 18 boards she grabbed November 17 vs. Saint Leo. Conner came out of the gate blazing and reached double-double status (10 points, 10 rebounds) with six minutes remaining before halftime.
Thursday marked Conner's fifth career double-double, her first of the season and the highest combined point-rebound total of her Stetson career. The 22 points were also the most scored by any Hatter this season and came in just two points shy of Conner's career high, set February 28, 2009 at Campbell.
Conner's award comes nearly one year to the day after the last Stetson A-Sun Player of the week, point guard Sharnesha Smith '09. Smith scored 24 points at Volusia County rival Bethune-Cookman in a 74-73 victory Dec. 22, 2008; Stetson re-matches with B-CU this evening at the Edmunds Center. Tip-off is at 5 p.m. with Live Stats and Hatter Vision broadcast both available online at www.GoHatters.com. Bill Topping and Dee Romine will call the action as Stetson looks for its third straight win over B-CU and sixth in its last seven matchups with the Lady Wildcats.
