Hatters Can't Weather Red Storm, Fall 87-51

Women's Basketball Stetson University

ETSU Runs Over Hatters 92-63

Johnson City, Tenn. ? The Stetson women's basketball team (8-15, 5-9 Atlantic Sun) suffered its sixth loss in the last seven games with a 92-63 defeat at the hands of host ETSU (13-8, 11-2 A-Sun) Thursday night in Johnson City.  Sophomore forward Jessica Conner (Cocoa, Fla.) and junior forward Ashli Jackson (Opelika, Ala.) scored 15 points each for the Hatters, who suffered their most lopsided conference loss in three years.

The last time Stetson was beaten by a bigger margin in conference play was a 65-26 loss at Belmont February 4, 2006 in a game that marked a program record for fewest points scored.  The 92 points ETSU scored tonight represented the highest total against the Hatters in an A-Sun contest since a 101-63 loss at Jacksonville State back on February 11, 2002.

Stetson fell behind 10-0 in the first two minutes and never came closer than seven points.  Natalie Pickwell's three-pointer with 7:21 in the first half put the Lady Bucs up 35-23 and the margin never returned to single digits.  ETSU led 47-34 at halftime and used an 11-4 run in the first four minutes out of the locker room to put the matter firmly out of reach.

Conner grabbed eight rebounds and Jackson had five to go along with their team-leading 15 points; senior center Ayesha Barkley (East Orange, N.J.) scored eight points and pulled down seven rebounds for the Hatters, who hurt their own cause with 26 turnovers and 1-11 three-point shooting.

A-Sun leading scorer TaRonda Wiles continued her hot play with 22 points and 10 rebounds for ETSU; Siarre Evans added 21 points, seven rebounds and four steals.

The Hatters are back in action Saturday at 4 p.m. at USC Upstate in the second half of a doubleheader; the Stetson men face the Spartans first at 1 p.m.  A-Sun.TV will broadcast both contests.
