Johnson City, Tenn. - Freshman setter Kelli Carneal (Fredericksburg, Va.) approached a triple double with 12 assists, nine kills and eight digs, but the Stetson volleyball team (0-8, 0-2 Atlantic Sun) still ended up on the wrong end of a 26-24, 25-16, 25-21 sweep Friday night at conference rival ETSU. The Hatters, who have dropped 16 consecutive sets, at least managed to keep the match somewhat competitive by reaching 20 points in two of the three sets.
Carneal's surprise setter attack role served her well Friday evening with nine kills and just one error in 15 swings for a .533 hitting percentage. She improved upon the .310 hitting percentage she had coming into the match, a figure which led all Atlantic Sun Conference freshmen. Still, four of her teammates hit negatively and the team's .076 attack percentage was not nearly enough to help Stetson pull out a victory. Senior libero Anna Becker (McLean, Ill.) collected a team-high 10 digs while sophomore middle blocker Sam Stonish (Stony Brook, N.Y.) contributed six digs and two service aces.
Lauren Baufield led ETSU to the victory with a 16-kill, 10-dig double-double while Whitney Cogburn also reached double figures with 11 kills. Jen Neice recorded 17 digs and Amanda Youell handed out 30 aces for the Bucs, who improved to 3-5 overall and 2-0 in the A-Sun with their third straight win.
Stetson concludes its two-match road trip tomorrow at Campbell. The match begins at 5 p.m. at Gore Arena and can be viewed by Hatter Vision subscribers at no additional cost live at www.GoHatters.com, the official online home of Stetson Athletics.
