DeLand, Fla. - The Stetson volleyball team (0-5) failed to get anything going offensively in a pair of 3-0 losses to Southern Illinois and Florida A&M on the opening day of the Holiday Inn Stetson Invitational at the Edmunds Center on Friday.  The matches opened the home portion of the season for the Hatters.  Line scores were 25-21, 25-17, 25-12 against the Salukis and 25-19, 25-13, 25-11 against the Rattlers.

Southern Illinois 3, Stetson 0

Freshman setter Kelli Carneal (Fredericksburg, Va.) put on a one-woman show with 13 assists, eight kills, six digs, five aces and two blocks but was no match for SIU's powerful hitters.  The Salukis out-hit the Hatters .350 to .101, led by Jennifer Berwanger's 15-dig, 14-kill double-double.  Sophomore outside hitter Kaylee Ream (Venice, Fla.) tied for the Stetson team lead in kills with eight while senior libero Anna Becker (McLean, Ill.) registered 11 digs.

Florida A&M 3, Stetson 0

The Hatters looked sluggish right from the start and never got a run going in the nightcap against the eight-time defending MEAC champions.  Stetson was out-killed 44 to 16 and out-hit .309 to .013.  Carneal's 11 assists and four kills led the Hatters in both categories, adding five digs in the process.  Junior outside hitter Stephanie Canfield (Panama City, Fla.) collected a team-high six digs.  FAMU had four players with 10 or more kills, led by 12 from Maria Ceccarelli.  Jessica Bond had 39 assists, Susan Egoavil notched 14 digs and Maria Gomez's devastating serve resulted in a match-high six aces.
