Coral Gables, Fla. - The Stetson men's tennis team (2-2) came up on the short end of a 6-1 result Friday afternoon at 31st-ranked Miami (Fla.) despite taking two singles matches into third sets and a doubles match into a tiebreaker. Sophomore Cesare Gallo (Portogruaro, Italy) earned the lone Hatter point with a 6-4, 7-6 win at #4 singles over Miami's Waylon Chin.
Gallo and sophomore Maksim Levanovich (Minsk, Belarus) forced Keith Crowley and Hector Nieto into a tiebreaker at #2 doubles before falling 8-7 (7-4). Levanovich also gave a good accounting of himself in a 7-6, 6-4 loss to 90th-ranked Carl Sundberg at #1 singles. Senior Mark Mestan (Cologne, Germany) and sophomore Njal Stene (Oslo, Norway) each took a set off their Hurricane foes before succumbing.
Stetson is scheduled to play two matches on a split-squad Saturday. Hatter contingents will play at Saint Leo at 11 a.m. and at the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center against Siena at 6 p.m.
