Jacksonville, Fla. - The Stetson women's golf team began the 2010 spring season this morning with a 17 over par 305 team score, good for second place out of 11 teams after 18 holes at the JU Classic. Freshman Alexandria Buelow (Palm City, Fla.) shot 74 and stands in fourth place, five strokes off the individual lead at Hidden Hills Country Club.
Volusia County JUCO powerhouse Daytona State College holds the first round lead at +10 thanks to a tournament-record 298 scored. DSC's Amy West also set a tourney record with a three under par 69 and leads by four strokes over Falcons teammate Mitsuki Katahira and Cincinnati's Bambee Dela Paz. Buelow is one stroke behind that group at +2 with Bradley's Kelly Amundrud in fifth place at +3.
Stetson received four consistent rounds behind Buelow to put itself in second heading into the final day tomorrow. Sophomore Lauren Cate (St. Augustine, Fla.) shot 76 and is tied for sixth place while freshman Anna Hancock (Lakeland, Fla.) is also in the top 10, tied for eighth with a 77 (+5). Junior Alex Banham (Birmingham, England) and senior Danielle Jackson (Seminole, Fla.) each shot 78 and are tied for 13th place in the 61-golfer field.
Stetson senior Lauren Darnell (Gainesville, Ga.) and junior Lauren Eliopoulos (Akron, Ohio) are competing in the JU Classic as individuals. Darnell shot 82 on Monday while Eliopoulos carded a 90.
The Hatters will try to chase down Daytona State from behind just as they did in the Hatter Fall Classic in November; in line behind Stetson after 18 holes are Cincinnati (+22), Samford (+24), Bradley (+33), host Jacksonville (+34), FGCU (+35), Presbyterian (+35), Bethune-Cookman (+48), North Dakota (+72) and South Dakota (+110).
