Stetson Stays Hot, Sweeps FGCU

DeLand, Fla. - Senior pitcher Amanda Lindsey (Byhalia, Miss.) picked up two more wins and improved to 17-9 on the season as the Stetson softball team (24-17, 6-4 Atlantic Sun) swept visiting Florida Gulf Coast (20-26, 8-6 A-Sun) 4-0 and 4-2 in a doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Patricia Wilson Field.  The Hatters have won five straight and moved into a tie for third place today in the A-Sun standings.

In the opening game, Stetson scored one run in the bottom of the first and made it stand up the whole way, eventually adding three more insurance scores in the sixth.  Junior third baseman Jill Semento (Umatilla, Fla.) dropped an RBI single into center field to score senior center fielder Amy Joyce (Lake Mary, Fla.), who had led off with a single and a stolen base.  Semento finished with two hits.

The Hatters broke open a 1-0 game in the sixth with three more runs against FGCU pitcher Catherine McDaniel.  Senior catcher Jessica Lokeinsky (Cooper City, Fla.) and senior second baseman Megan Voeller (Jensen Beach, Fla.) came up with back-to-back two-out RBI doubles; the final run scored on an error by the Eagles infield.

Stetson senior Nicole Peltz (Navarre, Fla.) went one turn through the FGCU lineup, tossing two scoreless innings to start the game before being relieved by Lindsey before the top of the third.  Lindsey pitched the final five frames, letting up just three hits and two walks and striking out five.  McDaniel struck out six for the Eagles.

Florida Gulf Coast struck first in the second game, scoring an unearned run in the top of the first on an RBI single by first baseman Hayley O'Mara.  The Eagles would strand two runners in that inning and give up the lead for good in the bottom of the third as a result of an error.  With two on and two out, Semento grounded to third but O'Mara dropped the throw from Tiffani Upchurch, allowing Joyce to score the tying run.  Senior designated player Katie Lawrence (Hilliard, Fla.) immediately compounded FGCU's problems with a two-run single off starter Kelci Breaux that made it 3-1 Hatters.

Florida Gulf Coast center fielder Mariah Fernandez brought her team within one with a leadoff home run against Lindsey in the next inning; the Eagles loaded the bases with two outs and A-Sun base hits leader Jessica Gary at bat but Lindsey induced her to ground out to shortstop on the first pitch to end the threat.  FGCU never got the tying run on base again the rest of the way.

Lawrence added another RBI single in the fifth to increase her team-leading total to 22 on the season.  She, Joyce and sophomore shortstop Chelsey Trotto (Lantana, Fla.) all had two base hits in the second game; Fernandez, O'Mara and left fielder Lauran Ziegler had two hits apiece for the Eagles.  Lindsey struck out five in a complete game effort.

The Hatters leave Patricia Wilson Field behind for the final time next weekend, traveling to Nashville, Tenn. for a pair of A-Sun doubleheaders.  Stetson visits league-leading Lipscomb at 3 p.m. Central (4 p.m. ET) Friday, April 16 and takes on Belmont at 1 p.m. CT (2 p.m. ET) the next afternoon.  Fans can watch the Lipscomb doubleheader on A-Sun.TV and follow the Belmont twinbill on Game Tracker at belmontbruins.com.
