Greenville, S.C. - Stetson (1-0-1) opened the 2010 Furman Diadora/SPINX Tournament against the College of Charleston (0-2-1) and the game ended in a 1-1 tie.
After a scoreless first half Stetson's Fredrik Brustad (Oslo, Norway) tallied the first goal in the 65th minute. Brustad made a run down the left side and the ripped a shot to the far side netting. It was the first goal of the season for the Atlantic Sun Conference Preseason Player of the Year.
After a solid defensive performance it seemed as though the Hatters might be able to hold off the charging Cougars. C of C however, was able to deliver the equalizer in the 78th minute when Andy Craven picked up a pass from Sean De Silva and hit a 20-yard shot from the top left side of the box that found the net on the right side.
Stetson freshman goalkeeper Andreas Schnabl (Blaichach, Germany) finished with seven saves. Brustad and Jonathan Mendoza (Altamonte Springs, Fla.) led the Hatters with two shots on goal apiece. The Cougars outshot the Hatters 24-15 and held a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks. Stetson outshot the C of C 4-3 in the overtime periods.
