Pall's Goal, Mello's Eight Saves Send Hatters Past Bellarmine, Into ASUN Semifinals

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Stetson men's soccer team is moving on in the ASUN Championship after defeating Bellarmine 1-0 on Saturday night at Hodges Stadium. Zsombor Pall provided the difference offensively, while freshman goalkeeper Murillo Mello delivered an outstanding performance in net to lift the fourth-seeded Hatters past the fifth-seeded Knights and into Monday's semifinal round.

The victory sends Stetson into a matchup with top-seeded North Florida on Monday at 7 p.m. ET in Jacksonville, marking the Hatters' second consecutive appearance in the ASUN Semifinals. It also served as a measure of redemption against a Bellarmine side that defeated Stetson 1-0 during the regular season and eliminated the Hatters from the conference tournament in both 2022 and 2023.

"It was a team win. Bellarmine did a great job of executing their game plan in the first half and we did not respond well. The team did a great job making adjustments at half time and I'm proud of Matt working his tail off and earning a pk. Zsombor did a great job of sticking it and the team managed the game well after. The backline and Muri earned a hard earned shutout and couldn't be more proud of them," said Head Coach Emmett Rutkowski.

Stetson entered the contest facing a Bellarmine defense that had conceded just 13 goals through 15 regular-season matches, but the Hatters found the breakthrough through Pall, who came off the bench to deliver his second goal in as many matches. His finish proved decisive in a tightly contested postseason matchup in which Stetson relied on timely attacking opportunities and a determined defensive effort to protect its advantage.

Bellarmine generated pressure throughout the evening, finishing with a 17-10 advantage in shots and putting eight attempts on goal. Mello was instrumental in keeping the Knights off the scoreboard, turning away all eight shots on target in the supplied box-score snapshot as the Hatters maintained their narrow lead.

The Hatters remained organized defensively as Bellarmine searched for an equalizer, with Mello receiving support from a back line featuring Junior Essengue, Ross Appolon, Jaxson Lee and Desmond Bullard. The Knights continued to create opportunities, including a low attempt from Martin Cadagan that Mello stopped in the 76th minute. Stetson's defensive effort helped preserve the advantage in a match where every possession carried added significance.

Offensively, Valentin Fontaine provided a consistent presence with three shots, while Pall made an immediate impact off the bench, putting both of his attempts on target. Israel Daniels, Desmond Bullard and Jaxson Lee also registered shots as the Hatters worked to create opportunities against a Bellarmine defense that entered the tournament with six regular-season shutouts.

Saturday's result marked another postseason milestone for Stetson, which entered the tournament making its 11th consecutive ASUN Championship appearance. After falling to Bellarmine earlier this season, the Hatters reversed the result when it mattered most, securing a place among the conference's final four for the second straight year.

Stetson will face No. 1 seed North Florida in the ASUN Championship Semifinals on Monday, November 9, at 7 p.m. ET at Hodges Stadium in Jacksonville. The Hatters will look to avenge a 1-0 regular-season loss to the Ospreys and advance to the ASUN Championship Final, scheduled for Saturday, November 14. Monday's match will be streamed live on ESPN+.
