Hatters Host Central Arkansas to Close out Regular Season

DeLAND, Fla. — With a spot in the ASUN Championship already secured, the Stetson men's soccer team returns to the Athletic Training Center on Halloween night for its regular-season finale against Central Arkansas. The Hatters enter Saturday's 7 p.m. matchup looking to extend their three-match unbeaten streak in conference play, improve their postseason positioning and build on a memorable tournament victory over the Bears a season ago.

Stetson (6-7-3, 3-3-1 ASUN) sits fourth in the conference with 10 points, directly behind third-place Central Arkansas (7-6-2, 4-2-1 ASUN), which has 13. Both teams have clinched places in the six-team championship field, but their final regular-season meeting carries important seeding implications.

POSTSEASON TICKET PUNCHED

Stetson officially secured its place in the ASUN Championship with last Saturday's 2-2 draw at FGCU, continuing a late-season turnaround after opening conference play with three losses in four matches. Since a September 26 setback at North Florida, the Hatters have defeated Lipscomb and Jacksonville before earning a point in Fort Myers, collecting seven points across their last three conference contests.

Saturday's result could still shape the Hatters' postseason path. North Florida has secured the No. 1 seed with 19 points, followed by West Florida (15), Central Arkansas (13) and Stetson (10). A Stetson victory would bring the Hatters level with the Bears on points and give them the head-to-head advantage in a two-team tie. The final order will depend on results around the league and any applicable multi-team tiebreakers.

Wins over Lipscomb and Jacksonville, followed by a draw at FGCU, secured Stetson's conference tournament berth.
FONTAINE'S BRACE SECURES THE BERTH

Sophomore Valentin Fontaine supplied both goals in the draw at FGCU, giving Stetson the lead twice before the Eagles equalized on a pair of penalty kicks. Fontaine struck in the 32nd minute and again in the 56th, the second coming off an assist from Benjamin Donato. The performance brought Fontaine to four goals and nine points on the year, second on the team in both categories.

Freshman goalkeeper Murillo Mello was equally instrumental in securing the point, making a season-high nine saves, including seven after halftime. FGCU finished with a 23-8 advantage in shots and 11 attempts on goal, but the Hatters held on to extend their conference unbeaten streak.

AN OFFENSE FINDING ITS RHYTHM

After scoring nine goals across their first 10 matches, the Hatters have found the back of the net 21 times over their last six, going 4-1-1 during that span. Stetson has scored at least twice in each of those six contests, highlighted by four-goal outings against Lipscomb and South Florida and a season-high six-goal performance against Florida Poly.

Graduate student Afonso Conde leads the attack with six goals and 13 points, including three game-winning goals. Fontaine follows with four goals and nine points, while freshman Matthew Perez has three goals and two assists. Daniel Makowem has also scored three times, all in his first collegiate hat trick against Florida Poly, while Israel Daniels leads the team with five assists. In total, Stetson has recorded 30 goals and 27 assists through 16 matches, averaging 1.88 goals per game.

SCOUTING THE BEARS

Central Arkansas enters the finale at 7-6-2 overall and 4-2-1 in the ASUN, sitting third in the conference standings. The Bears have scored 29 goals in 15 matches, an average of 1.93 per contest, while allowing 19. They have been particularly dangerous after halftime, scoring 19 of their goals in the second half, and have recorded four shutouts.

UCA recently showcased its offensive potential with consecutive conference victories over FGCU (6-0) and Queens (7-2), combining for 13 goals. The Bears are coming off a 1-0 loss at West Florida on Wednesday despite outshooting the Argonauts 20-14. Home-field performance has been a major distinction for Central Arkansas, which is unbeaten at 6-0-1 in Conway but holds a 1-6-1 record away from home.

Vaclav Kozeny leads the Bears with six goals and 15 points, while Maxim Sheenkov has five goals and 11 points. Rico Duggan has added three goals and a team-high four assists, including a two-goal, one-assist outing against Queens. In that tournament meeting on November 8, Central Arkansas struck in the 10th minute before Stetson rallied after halftime. Zsombor Pall leveled the match in the 55th minute and Dominik Topolsky delivered the winner just over two minutes later, sending the Hatters into the ASUN Semifinals. Saturday will be the first meeting between the programs since that postseason result.
