Stetson Visits FGCU with ASUN Positioning on the Line

DeLAND, Fla. — With the regular season entering its final stretch, Stetson men's soccer returns to ASUN play Saturday night with an important trip across the state to face FGCU at Pickering Field in Fort Myers.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. as the Hatters look to carry one of their strongest offensive stretches of the season back into conference competition. Stetson enters the weekend at 6-7-2 overall and 3-3-0 in ASUN play after rolling past Florida Poly, 6-0, on Senior Night last Friday.

The victory marked Stetson's fourth in its last five matches and continued a dramatic offensive turnaround for the Hatters, who have scored 19 goals during that stretch. More importantly, Saturday brings Stetson back into a tightly packed ASUN race. The Hatters enter the weekend tied for third with nine points, just one behind second-place Central Arkansas, while FGCU sits four points back at 1-3-2 in league play.

SIX ON SENIOR NIGHT

Stetson enters Saturday coming off its most complete performance of the season, putting together a six-goal attack and a clean sheet in a 6-0 victory over Florida Poly on Senior Night.

After weathering an energetic start from the Phoenix, senior Afonso Conde broke through to put the Hatters in front before Stetson took control. Daniel Makowem then turned the night into a career performance, scoring twice before halftime and completing the first hat trick of his collegiate career in the second half.

Freshman Leo Fraile added another milestone with the first goal of his collegiate career before William Mills capped the scoring late. In total, four different Hatters found the back of the net as Stetson produced its largest offensive output of the season.

The Hatters finished with 19 shots and put 12 on target while keeping a clean sheet at the other end. The result pushed Stetson's season total to 28 goals through 15 matches and gave the Hatters their fourth victory in their last five outings.

MAKOWEM MAKES HIS MARK

Few players made a bigger impact last Friday than Daniel Makowem.

The junior entered the match without a goal this season and exited with the first hat trick of his collegiate career, scoring three times on three shots to account for half of Stetson's offense.

Makowem converted from the penalty spot for his first goal of the night before striking again shortly afterward to send Stetson into halftime with a 3-0 advantage. He completed the hat trick in the second half, finishing a sequence set up by Ryan Avallone and Israel Daniels.

The six-point performance immediately moved Makowem into a tie for second on the team with three goals this season. He now has seven points on three goals and an assist while scoring on three of his 10 total shots.

THE OFFENSE HAS ARRIVED

Stetson's attack has transformed over the last three weeks.

The Hatters scored nine goals through their opening 10 matches before erupting for 19 over the next five. That run began with a 4-1 road victory at Lipscomb and continued with four more goals in a 4-2 win at South Florida. Stetson followed with a 3-2 victory over Jacksonville, scored twice against Florida Atlantic and then produced six against Florida Poly.

Stetson has scored at least two goals in five consecutive matches and is averaging 3.8 goals per game during that span. The Hatters have gone 4-1-0 along the way, with the only setback a narrow 3-2 loss to Florida Atlantic.

Through 15 matches, Stetson has scored 28 goals on 190 shots while placing 74 attempts on target. The Hatters are averaging 12.7 shots and 1.87 goals per match and have consistently generated opportunities, ranking among the ASUN leaders in total goals, shots and corner kicks.

The scoring has come from throughout the roster. Twelve different Hatters have now found the back of the net this season, with eight recording multiple goals.

CONDE CONTINUES TO DELIVER

Senior Night provided another fitting moment for Afonso Conde, who opened the scoring against Florida Poly and continued his career-best offensive season.

Conde leads Stetson with six goals and 13 points through 14 appearances, while his three game-winning goals are also a team high. The Lisbon, Portugal, native has scored on six of his 20 shots, giving him a .300 shooting percentage, and has put half of his attempts on target.

His production has been closely tied to Stetson's success. Conde has scored in five different matches this season, with the Hatters winning all five. He has provided the game-winning goal against West Florida, Lipscomb and Florida Poly.

Four of Conde's six goals have opened the scoring, giving Stetson an early advantage on four different occasions.

The senior's recent run has included a two-goal performance at Lipscomb, which earned him ASUN Player of the Week honors, followed by a goal and an assist against Jacksonville and another goal against Florida Poly.

SHARING THE SCORING

Conde may lead the way, but the Hatters have become increasingly difficult to key in on because of the number of players contributing around him.

Matthew Perez remains second on the team with eight points on three goals and two assists, while Makowem has climbed to seven points following his hat trick. Mills also has three goals, giving Stetson four players with at least three this season.

Valentin Fontaine, Mauricio Restrepo, Justin Blanco and Xavier Manning have each scored twice, while Benjamin Donato, Zsombor Pall, Junior Essengue, Maurice Hauser and Fraile have also found the back of the net.

Daniels has been one of the primary distributors, leading the Hatters with five assists, while Donato, Perez, Pall, Essengue, Daniele Mastroianni and Desmond Bullard have each recorded two.

Altogether, Stetson has spread its production throughout the lineup, allowing different players to emerge throughout its recent five-match offensive surge.

MELLO SHUTS THE DOOR

While the offense grabbed the attention against Florida Poly, Murillo Mello and the Stetson defense quietly put together another strong performance at the other end.

Mello stopped both shots he faced to record his second clean sheet of the season, improving to 4-4-1 across nine starts. The freshman has allowed nine goals in 765 minutes for a 1.06 goals-against average while making 22 saves.

His .710 save percentage leads Stetson's goalkeeping group, and he has allowed one goal or fewer in six of his nine appearances.

As a team, the Hatters have allowed 20 goals through 15 matches while conceding 10.6 shots per game. Stetson has also held opponents to 60 shots on goal compared with 74 for the Hatters.

RIGHT IN THE MIX

With the regular season winding down, Saturday carries added importance in a tightly packed ASUN table.

Stetson enters the weekend with nine conference points at 3-3-0, tied with West Florida for third place and sitting just one point behind second-place Central Arkansas. Queens follows with eight points, while Lipscomb has six and FGCU, Bellarmine and Jacksonville each enter the week with five.

North Florida sits atop the table with 19 points and has already secured a berth in the ASUN Championship, but the positions behind the Ospreys remain very much in play.

The Hatters have put themselves in that position by responding after a 1-3-0 start to conference play. Stetson has won its last two ASUN matches, defeating Lipscomb 4-1 in Nashville before returning home for a 3-2 victory over Jacksonville.

Saturday offers an opportunity to add another result while creating further separation in the standings. FGCU enters at 1-3-2 in league play with five points, putting four points between the Eagles and Hatters entering the weekend.

ROAD MOMENTUM

Saturday will mark Stetson's first road match since its 4-2 victory at South Florida on Oct. 6 and its first ASUN road contest since defeating Lipscomb three days earlier.

After dropping its first four true road decisions of the season around a draw at UTRGV, Stetson has responded by winning each of its last two away from DeLand.

The turnaround has been powered by the same offensive surge that has changed the complexion of the season. Stetson scored four times at Lipscomb and four more at South Florida, giving the Hatters eight goals across their last two road matches.

The Lipscomb victory was particularly significant in conference play, as Stetson jumped ahead early and never looked back in a 4-1 win. The Hatters followed by overcoming an early deficit against South Florida, scoring three times after halftime to leave Tampa with another road victory.

FAMILIAR FOES

Saturday will renew a series that has featured 22 meetings between the Hatters and Eagles dating back to 2007.

FGCU holds an 11-8-3 advantage in the all-time series, but the matchup has been much more balanced in recent years. The programs have split the last 10 meetings at 4-4-2, with neither side able to create sustained separation in the series.

Stetson will be looking to reverse last season's results after FGCU claimed both 2025 meetings. The Eagles earned a 3-1 victory in Fort Myers on Sept. 27 before taking a 1-0 decision in DeLand on Oct. 25.

Pickering Field has traditionally been a difficult trip for the Hatters, who are 3-7-1 in 11 visits to Fort Myers. Stetson's most recent victory there came in 2021, when the Hatters earned a 2-1 win.

The series has still produced several memorable Stetson results, including a 6-0 victory in Fort Myers in 2016 and a 3-1 road win in 2018. The Hatters also advanced past FGCU on penalty kicks in the 2018 postseason following a 1-1 draw.

SCOUTING THE EAGLES

FGCU enters Saturday at 5-6-3 overall and 1-3-2 in ASUN play, with the Eagles looking to regain momentum as they return to Pickering Field.

Offensively, FGCU has scored 24 goals on 172 shots for an average of 1.71 goals per match. The Eagles have put 76 attempts on target and average 12.3 shots per contest, numbers that closely resemble Stetson's 12.7 shots per game. FGCU has also generated 68 corner kicks, averaging just under five per match.

Junior forward Aron Martinez has been at the center of the attack. Martinez has started all 14 matches and leads FGCU with seven goals, three assists and 17 points. He has taken a team-high 35 shots, placed 18 on target and converted both of his penalty attempts.

Brooks Beeman follows with four goals and eight points, while Flavio D'Angelo has three goals and two assists. Emerson LaOrden has also scored three times, giving the Eagles four players with at least three goals. Ricardo Felix has yet to score but leads FGCU with four assists.

The numbers also point toward opportunities for Stetson's attack. FGCU has conceded 29 goals through 14 matches, an average of 2.07 per game, with opponents putting 81 shots on target. Seventeen of those 29 goals have come after halftime.

The Eagles have rotated between three goalkeepers. Eduard Garcia has produced the strongest numbers of the group, going unbeaten at 3-0-2 across five starts with a 1.00 goals-against average and .792 save percentage. Marcelo Lacayo has made six starts, while Harvey Sellers has started three.

FGCU has been an unusual team in terms of location this season. The Eagles own four of their five overall victories away from Fort Myers, posting a 4-4-1 road record while going 1-2-2 at Pickering Field.

SECOND-HALF PRESSURE

Stetson's ability to grow into matches has been a consistent theme throughout the season, with the Hatters producing more attacking pressure after halftime.

Stetson has taken 112 of its 190 shots in the second half, compared with 78 before the break. The Hatters have also generated 41 second-half corner kicks and scored 15 times after halftime.

That could become particularly relevant against an FGCU side that has conceded 17 of its 29 goals in the second half. Opponents have taken 91 second-half shots against the Eagles compared with 73 in the opening 45 minutes.

The Hatters have already shown the ability to capitalize late during their current offensive run, scoring three second-half goals at South Florida, finding the game-winner shortly after halftime against Jacksonville and scoring three more after the break against Florida Poly.
