DeLand, Fla. - Stetson was back on the winning track Tuesday night with a 6-2 win over the University of Maine (1-6) at Melching Field. The Hatters won the rubber game of the series and are now 6-2 all-time against the Black Bears.
Stetson (6-1) was led by junior Robert Crews (Port Charlotte, Fla.) who had a single, double, scored the game's first run, and delivered an RBI sacrifice bunt on a suicide squeeze. Mark Jones (Bunnell, Fla.) and Sean Emory (Miami, Fla.) also picked up two hits each, while Nick Rickles (Loxahatchee, Fla.) added a home run, his second of the season.
"It's a good win", said Stetson head coach Pete Dunn. "Crews had the big hit and scored the first run for us. We talked to the kids last night about how important tonight was coming off our first loss. It was a good outing to get back on the winning track."
Sophomore pitcher Kurt Schluter (Jupiter, Fla.) gave his team another quality start with seven complete innings of work allowing no runs and just two hits while striking out seven batters. He raised his record to 2-0 on the season. Jake Boyd (West Palm Beach, Fla.) tossed a scoreless 8th inning with one strike out and Robbie Powell (Punta Gorda, Fla.) threw the 9th and did allow a pair of runs, yet they were both unearned. Powell struck out one batter as well.
"Schluter gave us the outing we needed after being shutout last night. He went out and did exactly what we needed and shut them down and offensively our kids took a better approach and we strung together more hits tonight", said Dunn.
Stetson opened the scoring with two runs in the bottom of the 3rd inning. Crews led off with a double deep down the right field line and ended up scoring when Jeff Simpson (Valrico, Fla.) reached on an error. Simpson also scored on an error by the shortstop off the bat of Ben Carhart (Royal Palm Beach, Fla.).
Stetson added two more runs in the 4th inning. Emory and Mitchel Brennan (Orlando, Fla.) each singled and ended up scoring. Emory crossed the plate on Crews' suicide squeeze and Brennan scored the team's 4th run after a Simpson single to right center.
The final two runs for the home team were scored by Rickles. In the 5th inning he walked, moved up on a wild pitch and then scored on an RBI single by Jones. In the 7th inning he blasted the first pitch he saw over the fence in left center.
Freshman Kyle Zech (Naples, Fla.) picked up his first collegiate hit after beating out an infield single in the 8th inning.
