Hatters Hold Off Binghamton For Unbeaten Weekend

DeLand, Fla. - Stetson softball's three pitchers accounted for the win, the save, and the game-winning RBI Sunday as the Hatters defeated Binghamton 4-2 to capture the 2011 Stetson Invitational title. Sophomore Camille Czarnecki (Edmonton, Alta.) pitched 4.1 innings to earn the win and sophomore Courtney Gunby (Bishop, Ga.) pitched the final 2.2 innings to nail down the save as Stetson (10-8) won for the sixth time in its last seven games.

"I am proud of the pitchers, especially Camille, who showed a lot of maturity," head coach Frank Griffin said.  "I told her I wanted to let Courtney finish the game, and she let me know when to make that switch.  I was most impressed with that."

Stetson scored all four of its runs in the bottom of the third inning, the first one scoring on a two-out pinch-hit single from freshman pitcher Meredith Owen (Jackson, Miss.).  Sophomore right fielder Chelsea Whalley (Calgary, Alta.) added an RBI single, and two more runs later scored on a Bearcats throwing error.

Binghamton got one run back in the fourth inning on a home run from Jessica Phillips. The Bearcats loaded the bases in the sixth and cut the lead to two with only one out, but with the game on the line, Gunby retired Demi Laney on a pop out and struck out Stephanie DeLuca to preserve the lead.  She retired the side in the seventh inning to pick up her first save of the year.

"It was a great ballgame with lots of pressure situations throughout," Griffin said.  "You can't experience those types of situations in practice, so it was a great learning experience for everyone, and fortunately we were able to come out on top."

Stetson hosts Monmouth in a doubleheader at 4 p.m. Wednesday; Live Stats and Hatter Vision will be available at GoHatters.com.
