Miami, Fla. - Junior midfielder Jonathan Mendoza (Bogota, Colombia) scored his fourth and fifth goals of the season but the Stetson men's soccer team (2-2) dropped a 3-2 double overtime gutwrencher to host FIU (2-2-1) on Saturday. The match had been scheduled for last evening but inclement weather postponed the match until this morning.
Mendoza scored unassisted goals in the 18th and 30th minute to give Stetson 1-0 and 2-1 leads; in between, Quentin Albrecht scored for the Panthers at 27:00 to knot the match at 1-1. The Hatters took that 2-1 lead into intermission.
Shortly after halftime, Colby Burdette scored the equalizer for FIU (49th minute), putting in a rebound after a save by Stetson sophomore goalkeeper Andreas Schnabl (Blaichach, Germany). The hard-fought match, featuring eight yellow cards and a red card assessed, would remain tied through regulation.
Neither team scored in the first 10-minute extra session, and although Stetson had a one-man advantage for six minutes due to FIU's Arnthor Kristinsson receiving a red card at 95:37 it would be the Panthers that struck for the golden goal. In the 102nd minute, Nicholas Chase played a long ball to Burdette, who in turn found Albrecht for a left-footed strike to the lower left corner of the goal and the victory.
Stetson will jump right back into action, concluding its South Florida road trip with a 2:00 pm Sunday match at Florida Atlantic. A link to Live Stats is available at GoHatters.com.
