Junior middle blocker Ellen Hawks set the Stetson single-season blocks record in the rally scoring era, but Northern Kentucky came away with a 3-0 (25-21, 25-23, 25-14) victory in an Atlantic Sun Conference volleyball match Friday night at the Edmunds Center.

Hawks picked up three block assists on the evening, giving her 112 on the season and surpassing Meghan Wright's total of 110, set in 2002.

The Hatters (4-30, 0-17 A-Sun) committed just one attack error and posted an impressive .300 hitting percentage (13-1-40) in the opening set.  Both teams struggled offensively in the second set, and NKU controlled much of the third set to capture the victory.

“I thought we played hard the first two sets and did a lot of good things,” Stetson head coach Tim Loesch said.  “We had our best attacking set in a while in set number one, and in set two, we weren't as efficient, but we did some other good things defensively and slowed Northern Kentucky down.

“Unfortunately at the end of both those sets we had a couple of unforced errors, and we weren't able to finish them off.  I liked the energy we had and wished we could have come out with that same energy in set number three.”

Kelli Carneal posted her ninth double-double of the season with 14 assists and 10 digs.  She added seven kills and four blocks.  Kaley Melville registered nine kills and nine digs.  Kayla Weller picked up 14 assists and eight digs.  Madison Anderson and Cailyn Prewitt each chipped in five kills, and Taylor Johnson added three blocks.

“I thought Kaley Melville had a great match again, she has been doing a lot of great things on the outside,” Loesch said.  “Kelli Carneal had one of her better matches as well.  Ellen Hawks did some good things for us too.  I thought Monique Russell did a fine job defensively and with serve receive.  Really all the seniors did good work for us.”

The Hatters will honor their seniors (Anderson, Carneal, Samantha Freeman, Russell) prior to Saturday's match against Lipscomb at 2 p.m.
