Pitching Falters in Loss to No. 4 FSU

Tallahassee, Fla. – Stetson went into Tuesday night's game at Florida State with a well-earned reputation as one of the top pitching staffs in all of college baseball.

The Hatters left Dick Howser Stadium with that reputation tarnished after a 17-8 loss to the fourth-ranked Seminoles that included 12 walks and four hit batters, not to mention four wild pitches and the 16 hits racked up by FSU.

The Hatters will try to redeem themselves on Wednesday when the two teams complete their mid-week series at 4 p.m. Volusia County natives Josh Powers (1-0, 2.19) for Stetson and Luke Weaver (0-0, 17.05) for FSU will square off on the mound.

The mound was where both teams struggled on Tuesday. The 12 walks surrendered by Stetson were not only the most this year, but also the most allowed in a game by the Hatters in more than a decade. FSU pitchers fared only marginally better, walking eight in a game that took just shy of four hours to complete.

After taking an early 2-1 lead, the Hatters surrendered five runs to FSU in the fourth inning, and two more in the fifth. James Ramsey had the big blow in the two innings, blasting a three-run homer off the first pitch thrown by Stetson's Tucker Donahue, the fourth of eight Hatters to take the mound on the night.

Stetson came right back, however, scoring three times in the sixth inning and twice in the seventh to cut the Florida State lead to 8-7. All three sixth inning runs came on bases loaded walks. Mitchel Brennan doubled home the first run in the seventh and then scored on a single by Trey Blackman.

That was when the game turned. Florida State scored eight times in the seventh inning on five hits, including a grand slam by Seth Miller, three walks and two hit batters. Stetson's Jake Boyd, who had not allowed a single run in his last six outings, was saddled with five runs in just a third of an inning.

The 17 runs allowed by the Hatters on Tuesday were the most in a game since a 17-0 loss at North Florida on May 15, 2010.

The Hatters did come out of their hitting slump somewhat in the game. All eight of Stetson's runs came with two-out in an inning and the Hatters had 12 hits in the game. Brennan, Blackman and Sam Kimmel led the way with two hits each for Stetson.

FSU got four hits each from Devon Travis and Miller, who set a new career-high with six RBI in the game.

Brandon Johnson (1-0) was the second of five pitchers for the Seminoles and got the win despite allowing three runs on two hits in just 1.1 innings of work. Gage Smith picked up his second save by working the final 2.1 innings, allowing a run on four hits.

Chad Rood (0-1) took the loss for the Hatters. The third of Stetson's eight pitchers did not record an out, allowing three runs on two hits and a walk.
