DeLand Native Leads Noles Past Hatters

Tallahassee, Fla. – In a battle of young hurlers from Volusia County, Florida State's Luke Weaver got the best of Stetson's Josh Powers in a 9-1 Seminoles victory on Wednesday.

Weaver, a freshman from DeLand High School, earned his first collegiate victory by out-pitching Powers, a freshman from New Smyrna Beach. Weaver blanked the Hatters for seven innings, allowing just four hits.

The Seminoles improved to 19-2 with the victory while Stetson falls to 15-6 with the Hatters' third consecutive loss.

FSU jumped on top in the third inning thanks to three hits, including a leadoff triple by Seth Miller, and a big error in right field by Mitchel Brennon on a fly ball by Sherman Johnson.

The Seminoles added to the lead in the fourth after Justin Gonzalez delivered a leadoff double, moved up on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a sac fly by Miller.

FSU put the game out of reach by scoring five more runs in the fifth inning to chase Powers. Devon Terry led off the inning with a homer just out of Stetson leftfielder Robert Bruce's reach. James Ramsey followed with a double to end the day for Powers.

Joe Dye came on in relief for Stetson and allowed three runs on three hits before Cameron Griffin came on the finally end the inning.

Powers finished the day having allowed four earned runs on seven hits over four innings with one walk and one strikeout. Stetson turned to Seniors Will Dorsey and Robbie Powell to finish the game, and the duo shutdown the FSU offense over three innings, allowing just one hit.

Stetson avoided the shutout due in great part to the Florida State defense. The Seminoles committed three errors in the eighth inning, allowing Trey Blackman to both reach base and advance to third before scoring on a sacrifice fly by Spencer Theisen.

The Hatters had just four hits in the game despite hitting the ball hard several times. Stetson players lined out in the game five times and hit the ball hard on the ground several other times.

FSU got a career-high three hits from Jose Brizuela and two hits each from Ramsey and Jayce Boyd.

The Hatters will continue their nine-game road stretch on Friday evening when they open Atlantic Sun Conference play at Belmont. Game time on Friday in Nashville is set for 5 p.m.
