Volleyball Downed By Lipscomb 3-0

Lipscomb recorded 55 kills and hit .449 for the match en route to a 3-0 (25-16, 25-23, 25-14) victory over host Stetson in an Atlantic Sun Conference match Saturday afternoon at the Edmunds Center.

The Hatters fell to 15-9 overall, 6-3 in the A-Sun.

"First, I want to give my thanks to everyone who came out this weekend and wore pink in support of the Susan G. Komen Foundation, MeStrong, and the fight against cancer," Stetson head coach Tim Loesch said.  "As far as the match, Lipscomb played very well today. We struggled in a couple areas and Lipscomb took advantage and did what they wanted to do. We have some work ahead of us in practice this week."

The Bisons (14-6, 8-2) entered the match as the NCAA leader in kills per set and recorded 21 kills in the opening frame without committing an error.  The second set proved to be much tighter as the Hatters rallied from a 16-12 deficit to tie the game at 23, but the Bisons scored the final two points to grab a 2-0 lead in the match.

"I felt the first two sets were really close and we had a shot to win both of those," Loesch said.  "Those are the ones we are going to have to win the rest of the way."

Stetson dropped just its second home match of the year despite hitting .264 and committing only 10 attack errors.  Madison Akins recorded nine kills without an error and hit .474.  Erika White also hit .400 (6-2-10) while Ellen Hawks collected seven kills and three blocks.  Kayla Weller recorded 26 assists and Michelle Kastner led the team with 13 digs.

"We actually did a lot of good things today," Loesch said.  "We hit for a pretty good percentage. I thought that we had a few girls step up. I was happy Ellen had a big day blocking and hitting against some of the better middles in the conference. Erika White did the same and got a couple of blocks herself. Madie Akins had a big day hitting as well."

The Hatters have now played all nine A-Sun opponents once and completed the first half of league play with a 6-3 mark.

"I think a lot of coaches would be happy with that record, but it is not what our goal was," Loesch said.  "We are going to have to pick it up the second half and win a couple of these close sets and matches that we lost against Florida Gulf Coast and again today."

Stetson will have to play seven of its final nine matches on the road, beginning with a 7 p.m. Tuesday night contest at Jacksonville.
