Carmen Bernecker and Danielle Hurme were named to the Atlantic Sun Conference women's soccer all-academic team, the league office announced today.
Chosen by the A-Sun's Sports Information Directors and media relations personnel, the all-academic team consists of 11 student-athletes representing all eight league members. Players are chosen based on both athletic and academic achievements. To be nominated, a student-athlete must carry at least a 3.30 grade-point average and be enrolled at their respective institution for at least one full academic year.
“I'm happy for both Carmen and Dani,” said Stetson head coach Manoj Khettry. “Obviously both of them played key roles for us this year, but I'm delighted that they are recognized for their hard work and success in the classroom.
“While our goal is to compete for and win championships, it's also a goal to always have representation on the Academic-All-Conference team and have our players excel academically. I'm glad we had multiple players on the Academic All-Conference team again this year and hope we can continue to do so in the future.”
Bernecker, a senior from Holzmaden, Germany, currently holds a 4.0 GPA as a double major in International Studies and Spanish. On the field, Bernecker ranked second on the team with three assists. In her career Bernecker scored one goal with five assists while making 37 starts including 17 this year.
Hurme, the A-Sun Scholar-Athlete in 2013, owns a 3.94 GPA in Finance. The junior from Wellington, Fla., finished the season with three goals and one assist. She is a two-time all-academic team selection.
Lipscomb's Ann Buhigas was named the Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
