An epic seesaw battle in the Atlantic Sun Conference quarterfinals saw No. 4 seed Northern Kentucky eliminate No. 5 seed Stetson by a 3-2 (14-25, 25-22, 25-23, 23-25, 15-13) margin Thursday night at Alico Arena.
The Hatters let a 2-1 lead in the match and a 10-5 advantage in the fifth set slip away as the Norse (19-10) scored 10 of the final 13 points to advance to Friday's semifinals. Stetson finished the season with a record of 16-13.
The Hatters set a school-record with 17 team blocks in the match. Freshman Shelby Connors broke the individual single-match blocks record with 12 rejections. Two of those came on solo blocks and 10 were block assists. She finished one block shy of the conference tournament single-match record (13).
Stetson also picked up 100 digs, just one shy of the school record. Alexa Drost led five Hatters in double figures with 25 digs. Madison Akins (24 digs), Alexis Villa (18), McKenna Foster (14), and Kayla Weller (14) also recorded double-digit digs.
Akins and Foster led the offense with 17 and 16 kills, respectively. Senior Erika White recorded seven kills and five blocks, including three solos, in her final match as a Hatter.
Weller collected 46 assists to complete the 2014 season with a total of 1107.
Stetson hit .109 for the match, while NKU hit .104. Both teams posted 55 kills.
It is the second straight year Stetson lost a 3-2 heartbreaker in the A-Sun quarterfinals. The Hatters fell 15-12 in the fifth set to FGCU in 2013.
Stetson posted back-to-back winning seasons for the first time since records have been kept in 1980.
