DeLand, Fla. -- Stetson women's basketball head coach Lynn Bria was not expecting the Hatters' lone exhibition game to be a polished performance, but she wanted to see good habits that have been the focus of preseason workouts.
After the Hatters eased their way to a 87-47 over Warner University Sunday morning at the Edmunds Center, Bria was pleased with the team's effort.
"We did a great job of carrying over the stuff we emphasized in practice," Bria said. "I felt like to add a couple of new people and get them to play together, we did well on both ends. Overall our man-to-man (defense) looked pretty good, and offensively we saw a lot of good things."
Sophomore Brianti Saunders and freshman Sarah Sagerer led the offense with 16 points apiece. Myeisha Hall (13 points), Amber Porter (12 points), and C.J. Coddington (11 points) also scored in double figures. Jama Sharp (nine points), Keevana Edwards (seven points), and DeAsia Beal (three points) rounded out the scoring.
Porter added 13 rebounds, three blocks, and three steals.
Hatter fans got their first look at Sagerer and Edwards, the two freshmen on this year's team. Sagerer thrilled the crowd with 12:39 to go in the second half when she chased down two Warner players on a breakaway and swatted a lay-up attempt out of bounds. She finished with nine rebounds and three blocks.
Edwards, meanwhile, hit the glass hard, picking six of her seven rebounds on the offensive boards.
"I was very pleased with our two freshmen," Bria said. "That was probably the most positive thing I got out of this. I thought they were great.
"I was pleasantly surprised with how active (Keevana) was rebounding," Bria added. "She really gets in there, and we need that. Those rebounds are critical. I think Sarah is highly skilled. We can play her at multiple spots. I thought she executed very well."
The 2004-05 Atlantic Sun Champion Hatters team was honored with a pregame ceremony that featured an unveiling of the championship banner.
Stetson will open the 2014-15 season at 5:30 p.m. Friday night when the Hatters host Bethune-Cookman at the Edmunds Center.
