Hatters Drop Finale at UNF, 10-4

JACKSONVILLE, Fla.—North Florida banged out 15 hits as the Ospreys downed Stetson, 10-4, in the finale of a three-game Atlantic Sun Conference series, Sunday at harmon Stadium.

UNF's Trent Higginbothem led the offensive charge for the Ospreys (19-24 overall, 9-12 A-Sun) going 3-for-4 - including a two-run homer - with four RBI.

The Hatters (18-28, 7-11) couldn't maintain the momentum they gained from Saturday's come-from-behind win. Stetson's offense struggled in the clutch, leaving 11 runners on base, and twice leaving the bases loaded.

UNF took an early 1-0 lead, scoring a run on two hits in the bottom of the first. Stetson tied the game in the top of the second when Mike Fernland knocked in Garrett Russini with a ground out.

Stetson took a 3-1 lead in the third. The Hatters loaded the bases with one out and Josh Powers punched a single through the left side, scoring Mitch Piatnik and Patrick Mazeika.

The Ospreys got a run back in the bottom of the fourth. Starting pitcher Taylor Cockrell allowed the first two batters to reach, but allowed just an RBI ground out as UNF cut the lead to 3-2.

Higginbothem made his make on the game starting in the fifth when he blasted a 2-run homer to give UNF a 4-3 lead. He laced a two-out, two-run double in the sixth, increasing the lead to 6-3. Higginbothem scored when Ervin followed with a bloop double to left as the led swelled to 7-3.

Stetson pulled to within 7-4 in the seventh, but could've had more. Russini reached on a fielder's choice and moved to third on a two-out double by Powers. Kyle Pitts lined a single to center to score Russini, but Powers was cut down at the plate to end the inning.

North Florida got the run back in the bottom of the inning. After the ospreys loaded the bases with one out, Stetson was unable to turn a double play on Alex Merritt's grounder to short. A run scored and the lead was back to four runs, at 8-4.

Corbin Olmstead gave UNF some insurance with a two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth.

Cocockrell (4-4) suffered the loss for Stetson after allowing sevens runs on 11 hits in 5.2 innings.

UNF's Bryan Baker (2-3) was outstanding on the mound, scattering 10 hits in 8.1 innings of work. The freshman right-hander struck out four and walked five while throwing 132 pitches.

The Hatters don't return to action until next Friday when they host Jacksonville, 6:30 p.m., May 2, at Melching Field.
