Freshmen Goalkeepers Compete at Nationals

DeLAND—A pair of incoming freshmen goalkeepers are enjoying one final tune-up before they begin their college careers at Stetson next month.

Karlie Hightower (Carrollton, Ga.) and Ashley Ingolia (Arlington Heights, Ill.) have helped lead their respective teams to the U.S. Youth Soccer National Championship tournament, which runs July 22-27 in Germantown, Md.

Despite the Stetson connection, they won't face each other in their quest for a national title. Hightower is playing in the U-19 tournament with the SSA Chelsea 95 Elite out of Marietta, Ga., while Ingolia is participating in the U-17 tournament with the NSA Jaguars out of Naperville, Ill.

“It always nice when you have incoming players playing at a very high level,” said Stetson head coach Manoj Khettry. “It helps prepare them for the rigors of the college season. And playing late into the summer is always a bonus.”

Hightower enjoyed tremendous team and individual success at Carrollton High School, helping lead the Trojans to a 42-15-2 overall record in three seasons. She has played with the Southern Soccer Academy since 2009.

Ingolia is no stranger to playing at nationals, having helped lead NSA Premier to state and regional championships in 2013. She recently graduated from Rolling Meadows High School.
