One day after being named the 2015 Pioneer Football League Defensive Player of the Year, Stetson junior defensive back Donald Payne was named to the 2015 All-PFL first team.
Payne joins with 58 other student-athletes on the 23rd All-Pioneer Football League teams, announced Tuesday. The selections were made by the league's head coaches, who were not permitted to vote for their own student-athletes.
Payne and Morehead State senior defensive back Justin Grier were each unanimous (i.e. received all 10 possible first-team votes) sections to this season's All-PFL teams. In addition, Payne's first-team selection is his third consecutive first-team nod, with one season remaining.
Seven PFL student-athletes earned their second consecutive First-Team All-PFL honor – Davidson senior wide receiver William Morris, San Diego senior offensive lineman Pono Keni, Campbell redshirt senior offensive lineman Ugonna Awuruonye, Marist fifth-year defensive lineman Demetrius Williams, Dayton senior linebacker Christopher Beaschler and Jacksonville senior linebacker Grady Redding.
In addition, Drake fifth-year linebacker John Hugunin and Dayton senior placekicker William Will returned to the league's first-team after a one-year hiatus – each also earning first-team selection in 2013.
Ten of the 11 league members had at least one student-athlete named First-Team All-PFL, league co-champion Dayton leading the way with seven first-team honorees.
In addition to the 59 student-athletes recognized on the league's first and second teams, 72 student-athletes received honorable mention recognition. Stetson junior defensive end Davion Belk, junior offensive lineman Patrick Fogarty, sophomore defensive back Eric Martin and senior linebacker Dylan Wydronkowski were all among those recognized.
The Academic All-PFL team, highlighted by the league's first Scholar-Athlete of the Year, will be released Wednesday, concluding the league's awards week.
