Sidebar: Late Call Reversal Looms Large

Wilmington, N.C. -- Despite leading for most of Tuesday's game at UNCW, the Hatters found themselves trailing by two late in the contest.  However, if it were not for a crucial call reversal by the referees with under two minutes to play, Stetson would have likely had a much tougher time completing the come-from-behind victory.

The Seahawks led 45-43 when Jasmine Steele put up a 3-point attempt as the shot clock expired.  Her shot missed, but teammate Naqaiyyah Teague's putback momentarily put UNCW ahead by four.

The Hatters called timeout and asked the officials to review whether Steele's attempt indeed beat the shot clock.  With a noisy 4,893 elementary school students packing Trask Coliseum, it was hard to hear whether or not the buzzer had sounded.

“Coach (Daniel) Barber said the shot clock went down (to zero),” Stetson head coach Lynn Bria said.  “I didn't notice it, but he was right.  We asked them to check it, and that was a big play.   To the referees credit, they went and looked at it.  They did the right thing and took the two points off the board and gave the ball to us.”

On the next possession, Breana Bey powered her way in for a lay-up to tie the score.  That would later set the stage for an unlikely hero who had struggled recently from behind the arc.  DeAsia Beal was 0-for-7 from 3-point range at Eastern Illinois and just 1-for-5 at UNCW prior to knocking down her biggest 3-pointer ever.

“It really felt great because I have been brick city the last two games,” Beal said.  “I have been taking good shots, but I haven't made all of them.  The best thing was not getting down on myself.  Coach Bria tells me to keep shooting them as long as they are good shots, so hitting that takes a lot of stress off my shoulders.”

“She hit a couple big 3s today which I am glad she did because she struggled in her last game,” Bria said.  “We just told her to keep shooting.”

After dropping two tight games at the San Juan Shootout earlier this season, the Hatters turned the tables this week, earning two dramatic road victories at Eastern Illinois and UNCW.
