Bad Start Dooms Hatters in 11-2 Loss to LaSalle

Box Score

Visiting LaSalle ended all suspense early on Saturday, jumping out to a 5-0 first inning lead over the Stetson Hatters at Melching Field en route to a 11-2 victory in the second game of the season-opening weekend series.

The Hatters will try to salvage the final game of the series on Sunday when the teams meet again at noon.

The Explorers (2-0) jumped on Stetson's junior starting pitcher Adam Schaly (0-1) with four straight hits to open the game, including a pair of doubles. After getting a strikeout, Schaly's day ended when Josh Savanikus blasted a two-run double to the gap in left center.

LaSalle's Ryan Welling greeted reliever Griffin Fuller with another double, this one into the left-field corner, to push the Explorers' lead to 5-0.

The deficit for the Hatters grew to 8-0 in the third inning when the Explorers had two straight extra-base hits to chase Fuller, followed by two more hits off Brooks Wilson. LaSalle pushed its lead to 10-0 in the fourth, plating two more runs off Wilson.

The Hatters got their only run of the night off LaSalle starter Joey Ravert (1-0) in the fourth inning. Garrett Russini opened the inning by drawing a walk. He advanced to third on a double by Josh Powers and scored on a sacrifice fly by Vance Vizcaino.

Both teams added single runs in the eighth inning. LaSalle's came after Collin McGowan drew a walk off Frankie Romano, moved up on a walk to Yan Carlo Rivera and scored on a single by Ethan Springston. Stetson's run came on a single by Powers, scoring Patrick Mazeika from second.

Ravert worked five good innings for the Explorers, allowing just the one run on two hits while walking three and striking out three. He was followed by Friday night's winning pitcher Billy Worwick, who pitched two shutout innings, Greg Paprocki and Jorge Jimenez.

The Explorers finished the night with 19 hits off seven Stetson pitchers. Among those hits were eight doubles and a triple as every member of the LaSalle starting lineup produced at least one hit, and scored at least one run.

Powers had two hits to lead the Stetson offense.
