It had been more than a year since a Stetson baseball player had been named Atlantic Sun Conference Player of the Week before last week, and now the Hatters have their second in a row.
Junior Patrick Mazeika shook off his early season slump last week, batting .600 in four games and leading the Hatters to a 3-1 record for the week. Mazeika's award, the second of his career, comes a week after teammate Cory Reid captured the same honor.
It is the first time since 2001 that the Hatters have had players named A-Sun Player of the Week in consecutive weeks. That year it was Jeff Christy and Frank Corr who pulled off the back-to-back honors. Overall, Stetson has had players named A-Sun Player of the Week 35 times, going back to 1996, the most among all schools in the history of the league.
The return to form for Mazeika last week came as a result of two changes – the move from a 34-inch to a 33-inch bat, and a change in his walk-up song at home games. Mazeika had been using the song "Rockstar" as his walk-out tune, but switched for the weekend series to the remix version of the title song from the Disney Junior cartoon "Little Einsteins".
The song will likely become a fixture at Melching Field after Mazeika homered in all three games of the series with Penn as a part of a six hit weekend in which he also drew five walks and was hit by a pitch. He had a 1.600 slugging percentage, a .789 on-base percentage and scored seven runs for the Hatters.
In just 12 games this year, Mazeika already has a career season-high for homers with four.
Mazeika earned his first A-Sun Player of the Week award on April 22, 2013. That was the last award for the Hatters before Reid captured the honor last week.
The Hatters (7-5) will return to action at Melching Field on Tuesday night when the Michigan Wolverines (6-5) visit for a 6:30 p.m. start. Fans attending the game will receive special $2 admission and $2 concessions as a part of the $2 Tuesday's promotion.
Stetson will be on the road this weekend for a three-game series at No. 22 Ole Miss before playing a single game next Wednesday at No. 19 Miami.
