Georgetown Stops Stetson Win Streak

DeLAND, Fla.—Four different players scored goals for Georgetown as the Hoyas snapped Stetson's winning streak at three with a 4-0 victory, Sunday at the Athletic Training Center.

With head coach Manoj Khettry sidelined due to an illness, Stetson (5-4-0) managed just one shot attempt against Georgetown (5-4-0), a 2014 NCAA Tournament participant. The Hatters kept Georgetown off the scoreboard until the Hoyas gained a momentum-changing goal just before halftime.

After spending nearly the entire first half thwarting multiple Hoya scoring efforts, the Hatters had a letdown just before halftime. With 15 seconds left before the break, Georgetown's Meghan Shaver found the back of the net from 15 yards away when the Stetson defense failed to properly clear a cross attempt by the Hoyas.

“That goal was a killer,” said assistant coach Emily Buccilla. “It was just a mental breakdown on our part. We gave it to them and we weren't able to bounce back. Our players were incredibly organized defensively for the first 44 minutes of the first half and we did everything we could to prevent them from getting a goal,” said Buccilla. “We showed that we were prepared until we had a little bit of a mental breakdown.”

Down 1-0 at halftime, Stetson soon found itself in a 2-0 hole. Audra Ayotte scored off a corner kick by Rachel Corboz in the 47th minute, giving the Hoyas control of the match.

Georgetown added goals in the 62nd and 76th minutes for the 4-0 final score.

The Hoyas were offensively aggressive the entire match, recording 22 shots, including 13 on-goal. Georgetown was whistled for off-sides nine, while also attempting 13 corner kicks to just one for Stetson.

The Hatters return to action next Saturday when they open Atlantic Sun Conference play by hosting Jacksonville. Game time is 7 p.m., at the ATC.
