With just more than 40 days remaining before the start of the 2016 college baseball season, the annual run of preseason awards and accolades is off and running.
Stetson junior right-handed pitcher Mitchell Jordan is sure to capture his fair share of preseason honors as the anchor for the Hatters pitching staff. He will certainly have the attention of professional scouts every time he takes the mound this spring.
After being named the Most Outstanding Pitcher in the Cape Cod League over the summer, Jordan was ranked 51st on Baseball America's list of the top 100 collegiate draft prospects entering the 2016 season. He was the only player from the Atlantic Sun Conference to be named on the list.
Jordan finished the 2015 season with a 5-2 record in 12 starts for the Hatters while posting a 3.28 ERA in 71.1 innings of work. His season was hampered by an illness that cost him more than a month of playing time. Once he returned to the mound, he was dominant. In fact, he picked up victories in head-to-head matchups against all three pitchers who were named to the post-season All-A-Sun team.
During his summer in New England, Jordan posted an 8-1 record with a league-record tying 0.20 ERA. He was so dominant throughout the summer that he allowed just two earned runs all summer.
Jordan will make his 2016 debut for the Hatters on Friday night, February 19, when Stetson hosts the Blue Hens of Delaware. That game marks the opening of a 34-game home schedule at Melching Field that includes weekend series against Delaware, Creighton, Winthrop and The Citadel in non-conference play as well as league series against USC Upstate, Jacksonville and Lipscomb.
In addition to those series, the Hatters will host games against Siena, South Florida, Bethune-Cookman, Dartmouth and Florida State. The weekend of March 4-6 will feature teams from Villanova, Central Michigan and Illinois in the Westin Lake Mary Stetson Invitational.
