Hatters Fall 3-1 to Jacksonville on Milestone Night for Akins

Madison Akins Records Her 1000th Career Kill

Despite a career-high 23 kills from senior Madison Akins, including the 1000th kill of her career, Stetson fell 3-1 (25-27, 27-25, 25-14, 25-23) to visiting Jacksonville Saturday evening at the Edmunds Center.

Akins wasted no time reaching the milestone, putting down the first two kills of the match to hit the millennial mark.  She becomes the 11th Hatter all-time to record 1000 kills in a career.

The Hatters (4-18, 1-6) jumped on top of the Dolphins early thanks to a huge comeback in the first set.  Trailing 24-20, Stetson staved off four set points before grabbing a one-point lead on a block by Shelby Connors and Charlotte Earnhart.  The Dolphins (5-14, 2-5) would tie the score at 25, but Connors notched kills on the next two rallies to give Stetson the 27-25 win.

JU returned the favor with a 27-25 win of its own in the second set, but not before Stetson staved off two more set points.  The Dolphins went on to take sets three and four to close out the victory.

Akins hit .388 for the match with 23 kills and only four errors in 49 attempts.  She is the first Hatter since Tiffany Creamer in 2013 to record at least 23 kills in a match.

McKenna Foster notched her third double-double of the season with a 13-kill, 18-dig performance.  Connors added 10 kills and a pair of blocks.  Karmen Reivik collected a career-high 46 assists, while Marissa Salazar picked up 13 digs.

The Hatters held a 55-51 advantage in kills, but the Dolphins owned the higher attack percentage .225 to .191.

Stetson will return to action next Saturday when the Hatters host FGCU at the Edmunds Center.  First serve is scheduled for 3 p.m.
