Hatters Edged at FGCU, 2-1

FORT MYERS, Fla.—Stetson was denied in its first opportunity to clinch the Atlantic Sun Conference regular-season title on Monday, suffering a 2-1 loss at defending champion FGCU. The loss also snapped Stetson's school-record seven-game winning streak.

The Hatters (8-5-2 overall, 5-1-0 ASUN) now trail FGCU (11-4-1, 5-0-1) by one point (16-15) in the conference standings with one match to play. The Hatters can still clinch the ASUN title and the tournament No. 1 seed with a win on Friday at Jacksonville and an FGCU loss the same night at UNF.

"It wasn't for a lack of effort, but we just weren't as sharp today as we normally have been," Stetson head coach Manoj Khettry said. "We didn't start the game well. We got bulldozed a little bit. FGCU knew what was at stake, and they are a championship team and we're still learning about that. Once we figured a few things out and changed our shape it was a more even affair. As well as our team defending has been thus far, against a high-caliber team you have to be better overall, which we have managed to do already this season, in particular against Campbell, Lipscomb and Kennesaw State. We just didn't reach that level today and hopefully we will learn from that."

Monday's game was a physical affair. The Hatters, who entered play averaging just over seven fouls per game, where whistled for 13 fouls against the Eagles. Stetson was also awarded three yellow cards, matching their season total over the first 14 games.

The Hatters also had a goal waved off in the 76th minute when Sarah Collins was whistled for offsides.

FGCU controlled play for much of the contest, out-shooting the Hatters by a 21-6 count. But the Hatters didn't fold and fought until literally the final minute.

Lindsay Patton gave FGCU and early lead when her header found the back of the net in the 24th minute.

The match remained a 1-0 affair until the Eagles added a second goal in the 78th minute. Paulina Speckmaier scored from 12 yards out for a 2-0 lead.

Stetson didn't quit, and finally got on the board with less than a minute to play when Florencia Baldassini scored her first goal of the season off a corner kick assist by Hailey Williams.

"We're still a young team that is experiencing success and new challenges," Khettry said. "It's exciting but it's a learning process."

Emily Plotz made eight saves in goal for the Hatters, while her counterpart Melissa Weck made three saves.

The Hatters close out the regular season, 7 p.m., Friday at Jacksonville.
