Overtime Goal Spoils Hatters Comeback Effort

DeLAND—North Florida's Andrey Rosales scored the game-winning goal less than four minutes into the first overtime period, spoiling Stetson's incredible comeback during a spirited Atlantic Sun Conference game on Saturday at the Athletic Training Center.

The Hatters (4-8-2 overall, 1-4-0 ASUN) forced overtime by scoring two goals in the second half after the Ospreys dominated play during the first 45 minutes. But in the end, UNF (8-3-1, 4-0-0) maintained its hold on the top of the ASUN standings.

"We showed some resiliency tonight against the top team in the conference," interim head coach Jared Vock said. "Being able to do that shows that we're right there. We have a week to prepare for our next game, and if we win that we probably get into the conference tournament and that's been our goal all season. Everything we want is right in front of us."

North Florida held the Stetson offense without a shot in the first half while scoring twice on 10 shots. Adrian Nunez put the Ospreys on the board with a penalty kick in the 24th minute, and Glenn Johnson's bomb from 35 yards away in the 36th minute made it a 2-0 game.

The Hatters turned into the aggressors in the second half. Nathan Monsanto took advantage of a turnover near the UNF goal and found Joseph Alamo for the first Stetson score in the 59th minute, cutting the deficit to 2-1.

Stetson scored the equalizer in the 69th minute. After some physical back-and-forth, the Hatters drew a foul just outside the 18-yard box, where Luke Ferreira attempted a free kick. The attempt was blocked but immediately picked up by Gabriel Diniz, who found the back of the net from five yards away.

Both teams had chances down the stretch but neither could take advantage, setting the stage for Rosales' game winner.

Stetson keeper Paul Ladwig faced 19 shots and made seven saves. UNF tandem keepers Juanes Fajardo and Tord Pederson combined to make two saves on six Stetson shots.

The Hatters close the regular season when they host Jacksonville, 7 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 29 at the ATC.
