Hatters Fall to Jacksonville But Clinch ASUN Tournament Bid

DeLAND—Jacksonville's Juan Ramirez broke a scoreless tie in the 66th minute, sending Jacksonville to a 1-0 win over Stetson in Atlantic Sun Conference play Saturday at the Athletic Training Center.

The win by the Dolphins (6-9-0 overall, 2-4-0 ASUN) spoiled Senior Night for the Hatters (4-9-2, 1-5-0). Seniors Trent Austin, David Caulfield, Sebastian Contreras, Paul Ladwig, Peter Nyong'o and Arturo Roosen were honored in ceremonies prior to their final home game, but they unfortunately went home with a loss.

But it wasn't all bad news for the Hatters, as they found out after the match that they'd clinched a spot in next weekend's ASUN Tournament by virtue of USC Upstate's loss to North Florida. The Hatters will face Lipscomb on either Thursday or Friday in Fort Myers.

"We created enough chances to win the game but didn't get it done," Stetson interim head coach jared Vock said. "We hate to go into the postseason after a loss but we're playing in November and that was our goal all along."

Ramirez scored off a corner kick from Igor Ferreira, sneaking a header just inside the right post and out of the reach of Ladwig.

The JU defense made the score hold up as the Hatters were thwarted time and again down the stretch. Dolphins goalkeeper Patrick Harding turned in a brilliant effort as he made several fantastic saves both early and late.

Stetson outshot JU by an 18-13 margin but both teams had trouble finding the back of the net. Ladwig made three save sin his final home game for the Hatters.
