Hatters Progressing Toward Season Opener

Hatter Madness Coming Friday Night

With just 15 days until the 2016-17 women's basketball campaign officially tips-off, the Stetson Hatters continue to work through high-energy practices and scrimmages in preparation for another exciting season.

"When I look at this team, I like what I see," head coach Lynn Bria said.  "I think we are a lot further along then we were at this time last year.  We have so many veterans that it really does flow well at times.  I really like where we are and how far we have progressed."

Despite some moments of sloppiness, Bria says the team has improved quite a bit defensively since last season.

One of the advantages this year's team has is its roster size.  With 15 players eligible to practice and 14 eligible to compete during the season, the Hatters will have one of the deepest benches during Bria's nine-year tenure as head coach.

"I think the best thing about that is it keeps the pressure on them to be good every day," Bria said.  "I think also it helps with the fatigue factor and having fresh legs out there.  You can extend your defense a little more when you are deeper.  However, they still need to get a lot of reps together, and you now have more people that need those reps.  'That's the challenge of it."

That depth also allows practices to flow smoothly in situations where some players are not able to participate.

"Hopefully you don't have a lot of injuries, but if you do, you still have a lot of players that can practice and go against each other.  You can still have substitutions," Bria said.

The men's and women's basketball team will host Hatter Madness Friday night at the Edmunds Center.  The event will begin at 6:30 p.m. with the Challengers Special Olympics team competing and later participating in shootaround warm-ups with the two Hatter squads.  At 7:30 p.m., the teams will be introduced to the fans before competing in combined scrimmages, a 3-point contest, and a slam dunk contest.  Admission is free and fans can earn points by checking in their Hatter Rewards app.  There will also be a T-shirt giveaway, a Yeti cooler giveaway, and other opportunities to win raffle prizes.

The season will tip-off on November 11 against Webber International, the first of four consecutive home games for the Hatters.  Season tickets, mini-plans, and family 4-packs are on sale now can be purchased online (GoHatters.com/tix) or at the Hatter Ticket Office.
