DeLand, Fla. -- Ashly Smith and Kelsey Waters each went 3-for-3 and Brooke Hutto picked up her league-leading sixth win of the year as the Hatters defeated Southern Illinois 4-1 Saturday night at Patricia Wilson Field.
The Hatters (10-6) fell to Pitt 8-0 Saturday afternoon to go 1-1 on the second day of the Stetson Invitational.
Stetson banged out nine hits against SIU (7-5), including four for extra bases. Waters and Lydia Kinney hit back-to-back doubles in the second inning to put the Hatters ahead 1-0. Waters then doubled again in the third to drive in Smith with Stetson's second run of the game.
Molly Shasteen gave the Hatters a key insurance run with a sacrifice fly in the fifth, and Waters drove in Smith again with an RBI single in the seventh to cap the scoring.
SIU scored its lone run in the bottom of the third inning, but Hutto (6-1) shut the door from there out. The Hatter freshman allowed just three hits and one run while striking out four. She pitched out of a first-and-third, no-outs situation in the fifth with Stetson leading 3-1 at the time. The Salukis were just 1-for-14 against Hutto with runners on base.
Brittany Hawn had two hits for Stetson vs. Pitt (8-4). Jessie TenBroeck, Kinney, Smith, and Waters also had hits against the Panthers.
Smith and Waters finished the day with four hits apiece.
Stetson will complete this weekend's tournament play against Colgate at noon on Sunday.
