Hostetler, Hatters Shut Out Colgate 1-0

DeLand, Fla. -- Sophomore Chelsea Hostetler was a little sore after pitching Stetson to a 1-0 shutout victory over Colgate Sunday afternoon.

Some of it may have been the result of an extended pregame warm up in the bullpen while waiting for the previous contest of the Stetson Invitational to finish. Perhaps some came from the 99 pitches it took to complete the eight-inning, two-hit shutout of the Raiders.

And some of it came from constantly cheering on her teammates as they backed her with one solid defensive play after another.

"They obviously did really great because my lungs hurt from yelling," Hostetler said. "My lungs and my throat.  They did a spectacular job, and I am really proud of them."

Hostetler pitched out trouble several times, including escaping from the international tie break to start the top of the eighth inning without a run scoring. For the game, she walked five, struck out three, and allowed just two singles, both coming in the sixth inning.

"I thought Chelsea stepped up and got the job done for us," head coach Frank Griffin said. "It was her best outing of the season, and it is good to see her coming back."

Hostetler (2-3) had been hit hard in her past two outings, but she generated several soft pop ups and ground ball outs throughout Sunday's game.

"I came out a little more confident today," Hostetler said. "Even the coaches saw it. I have been working hard all weekend, so it was a little upsetting that (previous teams) were hitting me that hard. I worked real hard in the bullpen (Sunday). I warmed up about three times."

Despite several scoring opportunities, it took the Hatters an extra inning to get the one run they would need. With Kelsey Waters placed on second base to start the bottom of the eighth, Lydia Kinney walked and Molly Shasteen beat out a bunt single to load the bases. Jessie TenBroeck then worked a full count before drawing a walk to force home the winning run.

The Hatters had eight hits in the game, including a triple by Waters, but left 13 runners on base.  Waters and Ashly Smith were named to the all-tournament team.

"We left a lot of runners on base," Griffin said. "With five games in three days, I think they were a little tired and a little flat."

Stetson improved to 11-6 on the year while Colgate fell to 0-5.

The Hatters will host Providence in a doubleheader at 1 p.m. Tuesday.

All-Tournament Team:
Brianna Jones, Shaye Harre - Southern Illinois
Sarah Dawson, Maggie Sevilla - Pitt
Kiki Baldassari, Alison Abbatiello - Providence
Brigit Ieuter, Gillian Murray - Colgate
Kelsey Waters, Ashly Smith - Stetson
