DeLand, Fla. -- Kelsey Waters hit a two-run triple and Brooke Hutto collected her league-leading seventh win of the year as Stetson defeated Providence 3-2 in game one of a doubleheader Tuesday afternoon at Patricia Wilson Field.
The Friars defeated the Hatters 6-2 in game two to gain a split.
"I thought we were very fortunate to come back and win the first game," Stetson head coach Frank Griffin said. "Brooke came in and did a good job. It is good to see Kelsey Waters come around. She had a couple of nice hits today."
In game one, Providence (6-6) scored a run in the first and a run in the second to take an early 2-0 lead. Stetson (12-7) fought back in the bottom of third, scoring three runs, all with two outs. With runners at first and second, Ashly Smith bounced a single into right field scoring Jessie TenBroeck with the first Hatters run. Waters then slammed the very next pitch into the rightcenter field gap to score Kayla Drury and Smith with the go-ahead markers.
Hutto (7-1) made the slim one-run lead hold up, pitching six scoreless innings of relief. She allowed four hits and struck out five. She also pitched out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the fourth inning.
Waters and Jazmynn Jesse each had two hits for the Hatters.
In game two, Providence scored four runs in the first, one in the second, and one in the seventh.
Stetson scored both its runs in the bottom of the first on an RBI single from Brittany Hawn and a sacrifice fly from Waters.
Stetson had 14 hits over the two games but left 12 runners on base.
"We continue to strand too many baserunners," Griffin said.
The Hatters will host Seton Hall in a doubleheader at 1 p.m. Wednesday.
